Simple review: “Sex Is A Funny Word” by Cory Silverberg and illustrated by Fiona Smyth, is the best body, health, and feelings book for children written to this day. I have looked at a lot of them, but the differences between this book and others, like “It's Not The Stork”, are vast and IMPORTANT! This book talks about issues that many say are too complicated for children. Not only that, the author and illustrator make it look easy in comparison to other body books. It's a 150 pages, with fun, beautifully colored illustrations. The book is mainly intended for ages 7 to 10 - although, we're using it as a resource for our four year old, reading a passage here or there when there is interest our questions, in part, because there is nothing else like this.Also, check out their other book, What Makes A Baby, which is for all ages and awesome, too.Major points on “Sex is a Funny Word”: *Starting at the beginning it asks readers to consider four ideas as they go: respect, trust, joy, and JUSTICE. Including the topic of justice in a body book is exceptional on its own.* It's language is inclusive of ability, LGBT, gender creative, gender queer, kids who don't know how they feel yet, and kids who just don't care about it. SO many books relegate narrow versions of these topics to a single chapter or a brief sentence or paragraph, usually near the end of the discussion. This book changes how we talk about sex and bodies and shows that inclusive language is simple.*It examines ideas like gender and sex as social constructs. So terms like “Boy” and “girl” are labels and identities. They are words that help people to describe themselves, and they are identities that feel right to individuals.
