The Mode In Footwear: A Historical Survey With 53 Plates (Dover Fashion And Costumes)

Shoes have come a long way in the thousands of years since primitive man first donned bark and animal skins. Originally used to protect feet from harsh temperatures and rough land, shoes have evolved into an article of high fashion and style, a sartorial reflection of class, rank, and wealth. Take a stroll through history with this carefully researched, lavishly illustrated survey of footwear by R. Turner Wilcox, the fashion editor of Women's Wear Daily from 1910 through 1915.What did Tutankhamen's burial sandals look like? What shoes were the height of fashion in Paris at the turn of the century? The answers are all inside, along with hundreds of meticulously detailed images of every type of footwear imaginable: papyrus sandals from ancient Egypt, Chinese silk wedges for binding the feet, high wooden clogs for navigating muddy streets, English cavalier boots finished with rosettes and buckle trim, French taffeta dancing shoes, satin-and-lace boudoir slippers, kiltie golf brogues, jodhpur boots, American saddle oxfords, and so much more. Spanning centuries of styles from simply practical to distinctively dazzling, The Mode in Footwear is a true find for fashion editors, illustrators, costume designers, and shoe lovers of every kind.

What a blessing that this book is in print again! It is a priceless resource: painstakingly accurate renderings of historical footwear so clearly portrayed, that one can almost make the shoes and sandals from scratch. I have used it to carve individual shoestyles for scores of historical puppets. Of course in the beginning, I had to use the university's copy, then it was necessary to buy my own copy through used-book dealers. Now anyone can have their very own fresh, new copy.

Even if you don't own 600 pairs of shoes, like a certain former First Lady of the Philippines, this book, originally published in 1948, should be of interest to anyone who wants to know about footgear of the past. It covers Egyptian, Mesopatamian, Greek, Etruscan, Roman, East Indian, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Northern European (meaning the barbarian tribes of that region), and historic styles from Medieval days to the mid-20th Century. Everything from sandals and moccasins to boots of every height to clogs and pattens to shoes fantastical, pretty, and practical is covered here, with Wilcox's clear text and lovingly detailed pen-and-ink sketches. A beautiful and fascinating specialty book for historic-costume mavens.

An excellent, well researched reference of the history of footwear. Many illustrations (all by the author) that are quite useful for shoe design.
