Folk And Festival Costume: A Historical Survey With Over 600 Illustrations (Dover Fashion And Costumes)

A treasury of ethnic dress, this book ranges from the Amish of Pennsylvania to the Zulu of South Africa. Alphabetical entries cover more than 150 countries and regions, each represented by six or more illustrations. The survey covers not only all countries in which native dress is still worn but also those in which traditional garb appears only on festive occasions.Six hundred drawings by the author include images of men, women, and children and show details of characteristic decorative motifs and accessories. Captions on facing pages describe the costumes and their associated traditions. A valuable resource for designers, teachers, students, and researchers, this volume will fascinate everyone with an interest in the customs, designs, fabrics, and colors of international dress.

R. Turner Wilcox is, to my mind, one of the two greatest costume artists to be found between book covers (I'll get to the other one in a future review, so watch these spaces), and in this handsome book, originally published as "Folk and Festival Costume of the World" and recently brought back to print by Dover, she turns her attention from historic to ethnic costume. They may not be in color, but her beautifully detailed pen-and-ink line drawings cover over 100 countries, cultures, and specialized groups ranging from the tribesmen of Afghanistan to the Orthodox monks of Yugoslavia, with stops along the way at assorted African tribal entities, the Moslem countries of the Mediterranean rim, North and South America, Asia, cowboys and Indians, Eskimos, and religious and immigrant communities, and her capsule descriptions make up for black-and-whiteness by including color in their text. A handy index in the back helps you find the group that interests you most. This is a favorite costume book of mine and one I added proudly to my collection. It should be in yours too.

A very useful starting point when looking at folk costume, covering a wide range of cultures, but with limited examples of each group

The best ever
