This is NOT a technical book. If you have any general knowledge of SharePoint or if you are already a power user, SharePoint professional of any kind this is NOT the book for you. This book would help you if you are responsible for gathering requirements as it will educate you on the fundamentals of SharePoint and allow you to speak intelligently to your clients as well as have a general understanding of what a developer or architect may need.
This book is not very technical. It is all about planning before you execute. The first part of the book (chapter 2-12) is called "Planning".The second part (chapter 13-20) is called "Optimizing", but I would instead call it "Planning your optimization strategy".Although there is a lot of detail here (and it is all good), the book falls short when it comes to actually creating an overall adoption plan. There are many smaller processes (some meant to be cyclical) detailed throughout the book, but nothing drawing all the material together in a cohesive, overall plan of attack. If you are starting your path to SharePoint adoption, my suggestion would be to read this book from cover to cover, and take good notes. It really is essential material if you want to plan and avoid re-doing things later (a SharePoint site that is improperly implemented/used is no better than what you are currently using.) Use your notes as a cheat sheet/summary of the book, and refer back to the book for detailed guidance when appropriate. Also, go to success.office.com and formulate a high-level plan based on that site (define a vision, Id business scenarios, prioritize solutions, commit resources and execute, then measure/share success/iterate). Fill in the details with information from this book. Once you have your overall plan, do yourself a favor and hire a consulting firm to help realize your vision, it will be money well spent.
Essential SharePoint 2013: Practical Guidance for Meaningful Business Results is a very useful reference for applying business logic to SharePoint 2013 projects. Not only is the advice practical (as the title indicates), it is also a great guide for consultants and customers. I've been working with SharePoint since STS 2001 and have always had to rely on culling through multiple SharePoint resources to find practical, business specific information that is not just focused on the technical implementation. The true value of SharePoint is in assisting real-world users in solving everyday business issues. This book is a great guide for helping SharePoint end users apply SharePoint within their organization!
As a Microsoft v-TSP and Solution Architect for a SharePoint consulting firm this book is exactly what I needed to wrap my arms around what is new with SharePoint 2013 and how to practically apply the concepts. I would recommend this book to anyone considering using or developing solutions with SharePoint 2013!
There are too many ways to try to accomplish your goals in SharePoint 2013 (just like the previous versions). However, going down the 'bad practice' way will come and haunt you later on. This book dives directly into helping you understand the 'best practice' way which is essential for a successful SharePoint implementation at Every company. This book fills in the void to help folks understand the 'what' and the 'why' questions within SharePoint. There are plenty of books out there which will show you 'how' to do certain tasks, but a book like this will guide you to ask the right questions whether you are just starting to embark on your SharePoint journey or have been doing so for many years. How to plan your adoption strategy, measuring value of your deployment, planning the information architecture and planning for governance are some of the many crucial aspects of a successful SharePoint deployment that this book covers. The authors of this book are among the best in the industry and the guidance you will receive from this book is priceless!
This is one of those books where it is painfully obvious that the author was paid by the word quota. There are whole paragraphs that really don't say anything meaningful.
I needed something more advanced and less essential. I would not purchase it if I had a "do over". I have used SP since it's initial launch. Features change and disappear. A good, how-to advanced reference would have been preferable. Since we do not have a SP test site, trying out new features and learning impacts all users.
This is a meaningful business and SharePoint book that has a measurable/noticeable impact on the quality of your work, understanding, and approach with SharePoint. There are great SharePoint technical guides, resources available on the internet, or in book formats from a number of excellent publishers. However there are few SharePoint books that tackle some of the hardest, most complex, and challenging questions that are involved in SharePoint projects. This book is extremely easy to read - on point - and contains a plethora of best practices that are practical and immediately usable.I have been working in the SharePoint world for 8 years, have planned and implemented well over a hundred of SharePoint solutions, and even with all of my experience I found this book to be full of interesting insights, suggestions, and ideas that complimented or enhanced my own understanding of SharePoint 2013.At the same time I can't think of a better book to recommend for those struggling with, upgrading to, or trying to better understand SharePoint 2013 and how to bring the value it can provide to their business. Why are you still reading this review? Buy the book for yourself, and any SharePoint customers, partners, or colleagues you have. You won't be disappointed. :)
