I would give this book six stars, if it were possible. This book presents a hands-on guide to JunOS. From installation and upgrade to routing protocols and MPLS -- this books spills the beans. The author provides "recipes" to acheive common routing tasks on JunOS quickly and without fluff. There are no filler chapters on theory, design, and protocols. Just plenty and plenty of practical, extremely useful recipes.For anyone with a Cisco background, this book will get you up and running quickly with JunOS. Using this book, I was able to:1) install JunOS;2) upgrade JunOS;3) configure NTP;4) configure network interfaces;5) configure BGP and ISIS;6) enable a packet sniffer for troubleshooting purposes;7) configure RADIUS authentication;8) backup and restore JunOS configurations over the network;9) and enable ssh access to a router running JunOS.That's just scratching the surface of what this book covers. The more I read it, the more I learn -- and the more JunOS impressed me.The absolutely best technology book I've purchased this year. Highly, highly recommend it to anyone using JunOS or moving to JunOS.
Even though you've been configuring or operating Juniper routers for long time and you think you are familiar enough with JUNOS, you'll still learn something you don't know from this book; the "Problem/Solution/Discussion/See Also" structure helps to quickly find and read the exact information you need and nothing more, if you don't need to, just like you would use a standard dictionary.If you operate a Juniper router from time to time, or even on a daily basis, this book should be always on your desk, handy to grab, so you can use it whenever you need to answer a configuration or operational question, when you exhausted reading the standard configuration guides and the online help, and just before calling for help from a friend or from Juniper's Technical Assistance Center (JTAC).
I work mainly in a Cisco driven environment, and use the Cisco cookbook from O'reilly as a useful utility in my day to day work. I bought this cookbook on the pretence that if its has good as the Cisco one then I would have no worries understanding the Junos IOS and applying it to our new Juniper routers we have procured - well it hasn't let me down in anyway.Its clear, concise and very easy to understand.I attended a two day Juniper course last year mainly for the forthcoming arrival of these routers and I can definitely say this book has taught me more in the two days of reading it than the two days of the instructor led waffle I had to sit through.I am now considering purchasing the Enterprise switching cookbook also.Happy reading!
This book is a must-have for newcomers to JUNOS. It does not try to explain the theory behind the features being configured, but if you already know how to set up other kinds of routers and simply want to know how to do the same thing on JUNOS, this is the right book to have. The focus on examples versus tutorial information works well, but there is still enough background material to help understand JUNOS-specific features "by accident."
Aviva's flair for concise explanation makes this book a real joy. It's rare that I read just one recipe. If you want a concentrated dose of JUNOS that's sweet and easy to swallow, then get this book.
