As an A+/computer class instructor I can tell you this book is very well written, up to date and useful for "hands-on". It is an excellent resource for learning, teaching and as a Techs bench reference tool. It covers both hardware and operating systems better than any other book I have seen. Windows 8 is even covered in some detail where appropriate-which makes the book very useful for those who have newer systems. It is obviously written from an actual hands-on approach and the A+ supporting questions and Objectives references are relative and spot on. I highly recommend this book for both students and teachers.
The book is full of good information. The CD is terrible. lol. I suggest you do hands on configuring wireless access points, stmp, and imap. I also suggest you know many cable types by their number representation. (ex: Rxx, IEEE xxxx, etc). Know the form factors for different types of computers and know what hardware they need. (ex: Home Theater, Audio/Video editor PC, etc).
The book by Jane Holcombe has lots of info, recaps info, and has practice quizes. My biggest gripe/complaint is with the included disk. For a book on computers the disk is sure outdated with laughable and disappointing content and exercises. For example i was excited to do one of the exercises when under certain categories there's nothing. Why even have the category if there's no content under it? Feels really outdated and hardly interactive. the cd is secondary to the book you might say but in this digital age it carries just as much potential weight as a book and learning tool. More research should have been done on my part. to close the cd has a PDF of the book but beyond that is a major letdown makes me wonder how the disk is with other training guides like this one: http://www..com/CompTIA-Certification-Edition-220-801-220-802/dp/007179512X/ref=dp_ob_title_bk#customerReviews
I can honestly say that this book is brilliant. Chapter by chapter this book gives you everything you need to take your A+ exam. I went through this book in about a month before taking my exam and without this book I know I would not have done as well as I did. Everything was presented clearly and laid out in an easy to understand manner. I have not learned this much since I was in college. I recommend this book to anyone looking to get certified.
I took a course for A+ certification (not really knowing what I had gotten into). The book that I was studying from was hard to understand. I found the book by Holcombe easy to read and up to date including new technology. It had great study questions and a DVD for extra study. I have recommended to my classmates and will purchase the networking book as well. The delivery was quick and much earlier than expected.
This book is very extensive, and I agree with other reviewers that say, that if you can get everything in this book, the A+ test is a shoe-in. However, I want to warn you of something. The disk in the book, ONLY covers training for 220-801. [Which is REALLY good.] But, since Learn Key.com, ended their agreement with Osborne last year; you have to pay $600.00 to get the training for 220-802, from them. SO, don't be deceived that the entire test training is on the CD. The book it's self, if VERY complete, will also make a good reference Good luck on your test!!!!!!!!!! It looks like if you want the computer training for A+, you have to pay a pretty penny for it, unless you know a different way. Also the A+ exam is going to be update sometime in 2015
This is one of the Best study aids for CompTIA A+ which not an easy test. This book not only take out a lot of fluff in most textbooks it's in layman's term and gives explanation along with the answers. I would highly recommend it.
I use these books with a certification service and order them frequently. Lately, we are receiving books with striping down the cover, some with glue residues, and I've received two complaints that the enclosed DVDs were blank. I may have to find another location to purchase these if the quality doesn't significantly improve. This book retails for $50 and we should not be getting harms or drops for the price being paid here.
