This is a great book for those looking for some new and innovative stained glass ideas. Even if you don't use the patterns in the book, it will inspire you to think outside the box. Very artistic, not your run of the mill pattern book. A great addition to your glass pattern library.
I received this book as a gift. From the descriptions you would expect, I think, a little more variety. The author introduces an idea of technique (say, using slices of geodes or other gemstones in place of glass), and then has several other projects with the same feature. If you are shopping for a book of patterns to reproduce, this is fine. If you are looking to learn new techniques or get a variety of new ideas, this may not be the book for you. From my perspective the book breaks down this way:15 regular patterns without unusual techniques (sometimes including elements repeated from other groups, such as geodes and nuggets)1 featuring the "raw" edge of a sheet of glass (an element repeated in other groups)1 featuring lots of nuggets, including a technique that doesn't quite make sense to me (makes it harder than it needs to be)2 essentially identical "sculptural" pieces that have won awards (so most people won't want to make something similar) and use the "raw" edge of glass.1 innovative layering pattern1 pattern featuring geodes1 fused patternNow, the book is not totally without merits, the most useful pieces are just not the glass projects (except a few truly unique ones). Between projects are things like (VERY) creative ways to make decorative solder lines, how to draw an oval by hand, and how to use a proportional calculator. There are also reviews of things like the color wheel and interpretations of colors, selecting glass, and other topics that may be helpful for someone new to the craft.Personally the "fun, non-tecky[sic], conversational tone" was at times too informal for me. Overall this is not a book I would recommend for anyone with a bit of experience in stained glass, but there are good bits you can learn by borrowing the book for an afternoon.
After reading this book I fond it extremely helpful for all phases of my work. It is easy to read and understand. It does not matter what level of glass work you do you will find something in this text book to help you. It does not matter if you are setting up a studio and need advice on equipment need advice on how to work with nuggets laying out glass or soldering. You will find it in this very easy to understand book. The pictures and drawings are clear and easy to understand. Buy the book and have fun with your projects.
This is a beautiful book with a good assortment of different ideas for stained glass projects. If you are tired of doing yet another Victorian or Prairie style window, this might be a good book for you. The designs are more "organic" and free-form. There are also tips on color selection and framing your final project.Looking forward to making one of these lovely windows soon!Rich
took it to stained glass class & everyone was awestruck.... each person wanted to make a project from the book....each design is so creative & unique....amazing....
I really liked this book. Had some good inspirational ideas. Used a few of them on other glass projects. Had a lot of patterns, which I didn't care for. I'm not a pattern user for my stained glass. I only do original work, more free-form style. But had some good color combinations. Worth buying.
