This is the user manual no one writes anymore. And instead of being written by an engineer, it's written by a smart, experienced person who can help you figure out your phone. That leads to smart user interface on a deadline. If you've owned more than one iPhone, you'll find a tip or three of something your didn't know your iPhone 5s could do.If you've never owned an iPhone, and aren't interested in experimenting, but want to get a fast start on using your phone today, this is a great, easy way to feel like a pro. What I liked best is that all the smart advice was in one place, organized so you can find it easily. You may only need it for a week, till you learn your IPhone, but there are a few items I seldom use, but when I use them, don't want to have to struggle. So the book is on my desk with the other reference books. And I'm glad it's within arm's reach.
I tend to get a tech product and jump right in and start playing with. With that method, I rarely get full use out of a product. I also admit that I believe that instructions books should come with products, rather than always having to go online to get instructions. The Portable Genius series is meant to emulate going to the Genius Bar at an Apple Store -- get quick answers and tips about a specific issue with your device. This book does that for instructions. I don't think it will help with repairs though. That you still have to go to the store for.The way the book is laid out it is easy to find the instructions for a single feature. I wanted to learn to use Siri, without all the annoyances she can cause. I looked in the table of contents and there it was. The instructions are clear and to the point.I also started reading at page 1 and am working my way through. I'm amazed at what I didn't know about my iPhone. I try to read about one feature everyday. Soon I may be an iPhone genius. This is the first of the Portable Genius series I've read. Based on the experience, I will definitely get others.
The iPhone 5S is a mini computer (you already knew that) and no way do I need everything I can do with it. Or so I thought. When I bought my first smart phone I had no idea what I was getting into. The 5S isn't astronomically different from the 4S but my excuse for the upgrade was because I made the jump from the 4.Anyway, here I am with a new device and it isn't far from the truth to say my 5yo granddaughter knows almost as much about it as I do. Herein is the reason for the book "iPhone 5S and 5C Portable Genius" by Paul McFedries. I won't give you a run down that you can view on the product page, but, I can say the book contains everything you might possibly want to know about and things you haven't even thought of, or might've even considered, and how to do it without confusion, too. The book describes everything about the iPhone, in text and with photos and diagrams, making it easily understandable.I'm not truly a novice, though, so I won't be reading everything the book provides, and, I've just now gotten through the chapters that were of particular interest to me. However, there's much to learn about unrealized or underutilized abilities of the iPhone 5(C&S). And Mr. McFedries has made reading how to, both interesting and informative.
The level of this book is perfect - it's not a "for dummies" book, directed to the lowest common denominator, and there aren't pages wasted on redundant pictures demonstrating every single click. The instructions are clear, focused, and manageable without being a ridiculous waste of paper. If you've never used a smart phone, you might actually want a "for dummies" book- but if you've used smart phones before, this will get you started with your IOS phone and make you productive right away.
Although this book states it’s about the iPhone 5S and 5c, it’s really about iOS 7 and that’s ok. Except for the fingerprint functions, the 5s is identical to other iPhones out there. That being said this is a great book for someone who installed iOS 7 and is a bit overwhelmed by the functionsSimilar to other Portable Genius books, this focuses on the specific functions the average user needs to know without the handholding other books include. This assumes you understand how a smartphone works and you just want to know how to optimize your usage of this smartphone. Excellent screen shots and annotations make this a great gift for anyone new to the iPhone
It's been several years since I bought a book on how to use a piece of hardware (I used to work in technology).. Probably the last time I picked up such a book was for a Blackberry maybe five years ago. I consider myself reasonably technically savvy, and am not afraid to look through the products' documentation for an overview."Portable Genius" is well written, well indexed and can be read from cover to cover or by individual chapters/issues. For someone like me who has extensive smartphone experience, but needed to learn more about iPhone-specific functions, it is an ideal resource and has saved me a good deal of time and frustration by making my iPhone a better tool.
