In the 840 or so pages of this large format book, there are about 350 pages of written information covering an awful lot of general information on ammunition. This includes bullet and cartridge design and manufacturing, ballistics (internal, external, and terminal), history, and much more. The other 450 or so pages cover descriptions, dimensions, specifications, history and general comments on virtually every cartridge ever put into production for rifles, pistols or shotguns.I was rather surprised to find the book was so fascinating to read. I mean, what can you say about ammunition that isn't covered in the reloading manuals? How could you possibly spend 350 pages writing about bullets, cases, powders and primers. I was wrong. There is a tremendous amount of interesting information here that I've never seen anywhere else. I found that I spent several evenings almost devouring every word.Caution: It did make me think that I needed a new rifle or two in some strange calibers.
This is only the second volume but it is on its fifth printing now and each new printing adds new material and information. The older volumes are still highly useful for the general sportsman and collector.
The book covers in nice detail, many of the items in my collection, however there are a number of obsolete cartridges that are not covered that i have and would like to have more information on. Computer images do not do justice in the front sections of he book, and actual size photos would be an advantage in future editions. The measurements given are excellent for identification of suspect cartridges, and overall, I am happy with my purchase, but it could have been better.
Found it a detailed reference for small arms ammo, but was hoping for more info on cartridges up to 37mm. Good value !
Exellent book sharing the history of ammunition development, ballistic information and mathematic formulas that will help anyone interested in expanding their knowledge of firearms and ammunition. Very well written, easy to read, an enjoyable book.
