This slim volume is a marginally useful reference work for those interested in Civil War small arms ammunition. It is not, however, for the novice, though given the dearth of publications on this topic it will have to be used. The book is logically ordered by caliber size. Photographs of bullets, including some with cartridges still attached, are presented. Unfortunately, views of the interior base of the bullets are not included, save for one page of drawings.Very little information is presented with respect to the manufacture of bullets, and what there is lacks decent illustrations (save a few difficult to view woodcuts). The text and oft times the specific bullet references are confusing. An errata page glued to the inside cover is somewhat helpful, but the occasional description of bullets on pages separate from pics adds to the confusion.Be prepared to work to understand and use this book.
I have had this book for 2 years and it is the best reference on the topic of Civil War bullets. It is paper back, so you can take it with you to the shows and shops to check the dealer identification. You can't miss with this price.
There is some good information in this "pamplet" but I was disappointed that it turned out to be more of a list with very little narrative. If you already have a good understanding of this subject then it might prove to be a handy tool for additional information.
I use this in conjunction with McKee and Mason's Civil War Projectiles. I compare my Civil War bullets in both reference guides, so I know that I have correctly identified them.I am new to Kindle books, so I am not as fast with this book as I am McKee & Mason's. It is good to have a cross reference.I would recommend this to ALL people with a Civil War Bullet Collection.
James Thomas and Dean Thomas are very serious Civil War Historians and have spent a lot of time studying Civil War Bullets and Cartridges. They are the experts in Civil War small arms ordinance, There are hundreds of pictures of Civil War Bullets and cartridges in this small book.
I purchased this book for my son's Birthday. It is not a book with a lot of pages however it is a very informative book! The book has a lot of pictures of different bullets and how they were used during the Civil War! It isn't like the book I owned however I liked this book much better! I Highly Recommend book and the Seller!
This book is a very important volume in my archeology library. It contains descriptions and pictures found no where else. I have recommended it to other archeologists.
This is the most useful and portable Civil War bullet handbook ever! It is a must have for all relic hunters and Civil War lovers.
