I've just finished reading Jeff Doyle's "Routing TCP/IP Volume I" book and feel confident that I can now pass the CCIE lab in the near future. His presentation of TCP/IP IGP routing protocols is very clear and concise, with a perspective and insight into internetworking which is rarely encountered. This edition combines introductory, historical, conceptual and practical materials, and RFC's, with a first rate writing ability into one scintillating package.The chapter on OSPF was particularly satisfying going into the depth where the next step would be research into the protocol. Having said that there is a very pragmatic side to this book including configuration examples within the text as well as configuration and troubleshooting exercises and review questions at the end of the relevant chapters.By leaving nothing on IGP's out and all the while remaining emminently readable, this book marks a very welcome and refreshing addition to the internetworking literature and will no doubt become known as a seminal work. I truly appreciate what I have learnt from this book, and am very much looking forward to the publication of Jeff's next work on EGP's, in Volume II, in July.
As an CCIE, I found this book is very informative and very accurate. It disects the details of the routing protocol, including IS-IS. How many books out there do you see that talk about IS-IS? If you want to gain basic and advance about default route, static routing, IGRP, EIGRP, OSPF, ISIS, this is the bible for you. With Sam Halibi's book and this book, you will probably solidfy your preparation for CCIE lab test. Of course, with lots and lost of hands on practice. But you need these two books for practicing! What this book did for me was strengthen my knowledge and understanding about network routing protocols. I've been searching for a book such as this one, with such detailed information about routing metrics, EIGRP DUAL, OSPF/RIP router redistribution, etc... Now when I go on interviews, I'm more confident than every before. There are a certain number of books that I call the BIBLE which means never go to work without them,(#1-Doug Comer TCP/IP Volume-1, #2-Mark Miller Troubleshooting TCP/IP, #3-Kennedy Clark & kevin Hamilton Cisco Lan Switching,) just to name a few, and now added to that list is Jeff Doyle's Routing TCP/IP Volume-1.What is Jeff Doyles email address, the one listed does not work.
Having just successfully written the CCIE Written exam today, I can honestly say that I probably wouldn't have without this book, and I have an excellent foundation for the lab work ahead.I won't repeat what others have said, but I would strongly recommend this book for those working on their CCNP as well, particularly for ACRC. This book would have helped illuminate a great number of topics from that tough course. Very impressive work and I am sure I will be wearing out the spine in the years ahead. Thanks, Jeff!
I picked up this book on several recommendations before I was a CCNA and never got far with it. Since then, I have become a CCNA and maintain a network using Cisco equipment. Recently, I blew the dust off the book and could not put it down. It's written like a novel and is fun to read. There's a small troubleshooting example in the static routing section that is written like a murder mystery. Why can't the client connect? If you're an absolute beginner you probably won't like this book. But if you're a CCNA or have equivalent knowledge you will be hard-pressed to find a better written book.
After getting my CCNA, I was looking for a book to help me prepare for the CCNP. This book does just that! It presents everything is a logical order and builds from that. This one is definitely a keeper.
When it came down to researching routing protocols for some training courses the company I work for is developing, Jeff Doyle provided the perfect starting point. In this book, he uses simple language (well, as simple as the computer world can be) and clear-cut definitions that won't leave your mind spinning. Read this book before you read any other material related to routing protocols (including the RFCs). Once you've read it, you will be able to sift through the disorganized information found in most technical books and (especially) in the RFCs. You may not even necessarily need to read any other supplementary material (Doyle is thorough in his analysis of each routing protocol). Although it is a cliche' statement - I highly recommend this book.
This book is the best! Read it, do all the exercises, then re-read it again... I absolutely GUARANTEE you'll have an incredible *real-world* grasp of routing protocols after going through this text. Mr. Doyle is no doubt one of the finest authors of technical literature to date. His common sense approach to explaining difficult concepts is hardly matched by anything I've read thus far. I can hardly wait for volume II to come out in April! I've recommended this book to everyone I know in the tech. field, and now I'll broaden that recommendation to YOU! Get it, read it, know it! :-)
