Guide To TCP/IP (Networking (Course Technology))

Guide to TCP/IP, Fourth Edition introduces readers to the concepts, terminology, protocols, and services that the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) suite uses to make the Internet work. This text stimulates hands-on skills development by not only describing TCP/IP capabilities, but also by encouraging users to interact with protocols. It provides the troubleshooting knowledge and tools that network administrators and analysts need to keep their systems running smoothly. Guide to TCP/IP, Fourth Edition covers topics ranging from traffic analysis and characterization, to error detection, security analysis and more. Both IPv4 and IPv6 are covered in detail.

First of all I'd like to point out that I bought this textbook for a college class. As we all know, college textbooks are expensive and this book was no exception. Additionally, there are not many changes between editions, they only do this so that teachers have to make their students buy the new version when it comes around, which makes it harder for students to buy used books. This is a very dry textbook, the authors don't seem to put any enjoyment into their work. I've read other networking books which were a joy to read, but this one is just painful to get through, in my opinion.

UNFORTUNATELY, this book is required for my class. It is way overpriced and poorly written. This is more like a dictionary of technical terms and doesn't go into the topics in detail or provide real world examples to expand on said topics. There's a lot of irrelevant text, making it a labor to read about one of my favorite subjects. The ideas and topics bounce all over the place and makes reading the book difficult.

This is one of those technical books that are for a very niche audience. Don't get this if you're trying to learn TCP/IP because you'll likely get lost in all the thick details of how the protocol works. There are other TCP/IP books on that have received nearly 5 stars for you. This, instead, is a good book if you're already familiar with TCP/IP and want to 1) reaffirm what you know and 2) get down to the minutiae of how to make the different components of IPv4 and IPv6 operate. This book definitely has its place, just not for how many colleges are using it.

The binding started to come apart after only one week of reading for my college course. Some of the required reading for the course referred to appendixes that did not exist. The book only had appendix A. I went to the publishers Web site Cengage Learning and the book they list shows the appendixes and chapter 12 even has a different title than the one I purchased from .

This book is uber complicated to understand. You literally have to go through each page as you will lose sight of the context if you jump ahead. This is a great book with all the information to teach you... But it is very dull and can be excruciating to read if you are not in the right mood.

Extremely difficult read. Facts and grammar contained inside this book are as informational, blunt, long-winded and lifeless as a Wikipedia article or any other standard textbook. The author makes absolutely no effort to make the topics inside easy to understand, includes no real life examples, and instead focused on cramming more facts per paragraph than an encyclopedia. You will feel like averting your eyes at least once per paragraph. Most of you who own this book will be forced to buy it for a college course. Do not buy this to read for fun. You'll be bored before reaching Chapter 2. I am suffering.

This is not a beginner's book. However, it is the ONLY book I have seen which goes deeply enough into TCP/IP to cover material for the CCIE Security Written Exam. The IPv6 material is overwhelmingly better than the Cisco Press book on IPv6. I highly recommend this book for anyone studying for the CCIE Security Written. If you are new to networking/security - read TCP/IP Illustrated. If you are new to Wireshark / protocol analysis - read Wireshark 101. But if you have experience and want to take your knowledge to the next level, this book is for you.

This textbook, draws a very complete and easy to understand layout of the TCP/IP, OSI, and networking technologies related to each. One thing I wish they would change, is the pictures for the hands on or case projects. The pictures are extremely small and hard to read.
