MCSE : TCP/IP Study Guide

Designed for individuals taking the Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) exam, this book provides complete material for the MCSE Internetworking with Microsoft TCP/IP test and shows how to plan, create and administer TCP/IP networks on NT Server 4.0. TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) is a set of communications protocols allowing computers of different types to communicate via a common language. TCP/IP forms the basis for the Internet and is increasingly used for corporate networks and internetworks. The companion CD-ROM contains information resources on TCP/IP and a sample testing program for the MCSE Internetworking with Microsoft TCP/IP test.

The authors have constructed an excellent study guide. I passed the test the first time around with a 966. The book presented TCP/IP, and Microsoft's DHCP, WINS, and DNS in such an easy to understand manner, it seemed a fog was lifted. Throughout my pursuit of an MCSE many subjects were only touched on, not explained in any detail. I had a general understanding of concepts like DHCP, WINS, and DNS, but not until I finished this book did I feel comfortable with these powerful services. Everything finally made sense. I enjoyed the humor added to a potentially boring subject. I strongly recommend this book to anyone trying to pass TCP/IP. Good Luck!

I was pretty disappointed in this book. I had read the Sybex "Networking Essentials" and thought it was great. Also, the reviews for this book were very high. I do like how much information Sybex gives - it is important to me to really understand the subject and material even if it means learning things that will not be on the test. However, trying to read the book was extremely annoying at times. The way Lammle wrote the book is like parents trying to "talk cool" to their teenage children. There are many analogies that say things are "very cool" and "You can get the skinny" on things. I just wanted the information! I spent way too much time trying to figure out what the hell the guy was talking about rather then being able to read the facts and learn. I finally finished the book, and do know the subject well. But I would be very hesitant to buy another book by this author. There are also quite a few errors, and some of the questions and answers are flat out wrong. Oh well! I also read Exam Cram and Nutshell, so I am not relying on one source.

The book was a very good study guide to fill in the gaps of standards/subnetting that I'd not gotten into in my previous years of experience in networking. The only problem I had with it was that he was too wordy at times and there were TOO many typos, etc. At one point he said, "We didn't mention this before..." but it was mentioned in the previous chapter.. not enough attention to detail. However, after reading this book I scored 1000 on the test. I am pleased.

I have to agree with both the people who hate this book and with the people who love it. It is a hard book to read, there is no doubt about it. There are also some errors in the book (mostly typos). You need to be on your toes to catch wrong answers and such things. This book, if you can wade your way through it, prepares you for the test 100%. Never before have I been as thoroughly prepared for an MCSE test as I was after using this book exclusively. It gets the job done! That is why I rate it with five stars. One more comment as a postscript of sorts: I think the author is very humorous. To all you out there who dislike the analogies, I can see your point. Mr. Lammle et. al. make the mistake of trying to spice up a very dry subject with few sporadic witticisms. If you are the sort that can't handle a "funny" every once and a while, one who studying is derailed by an occasional venture into the right side of the brain, then be forewarned. I for one, found the dry humor of the author ...well, humorous.

I read this book and took my MCSE TCP/IP exam and passed with flying colors. I also used this book to teach at a university, those who wished to pass the exam as well. May not be the latest and greatest on IPv6 but, for the time it was written, you could have easily passed the exam on this book (and some common sense) alone.

It took me a week and a half to finish this book.I took the practice exams once and then took the test. I almost aced this test! It was too easy!

It makes sense that it takes a Microsoft Book to pass a microsoft exam, right? The book is not easy to read--but it includes everything you need to pass. I would have given it higher marks except it put me to sleep.I recommend supplementing it with an easier to read text to get an overall feel for the topics before plunging into this tome.Index:1. An Introduction to TCP/IP2. Identifying Machines with IP Addressing3. Implementing IP Routing4. IP Address Resolution4. Host Name Resolution6. NetBIOS over TCP/IP7. This book is easy reading (I finished it in about 2 days), covers all the bases, and the review questions border breaking the non-disclosure agreement on the actual test. Using this book as my guide (and following all the activities) I got a 933 on the exam within one week of recieving this book in the mail.
