I am a self taught bead weaver. This includes the fact that I have never taken a class to teach me any technique I've learned. I've read books, watched videos, read, and re-read instructions many, many times. As you can guess, I catch on very quickly to new things, and am constantly looking for something new to challenge my skill.This book did exactly that. I am not at all disappointed at this purchase! It included a little bit of "old knowledge" I had gathered (peyote stitch) and combined it with a completely new view on how to use this simple little stitch. (Now mind you, you DON'T already have to know how to do peyote stitch, as Julia does a lovely job of explaining how-to with pictures. However, it does help tremendously.) Julia includes both picture charts, and word maps to help the beader. I have found that also being a knitter helps. The word map is my best friend. I can simply read along with it no problem, and hardly ever look at the picture chart. This is simply all preference though.So far, I have made 2 complete boxes, and am working on my third. The biggest thing I can recommend, like most other people ahead of me have stated, you MUST read through the instructions first. This isn't something you can just jump into. When I received my book, I took almost a day and a half to completely read through everything, and re-read it if I didn't quite understand it. Once you get going, it is very addictive.Also remember that if you have never made anything like this before, don't be disgruntled about how your first box comes out. Think of it as trial and error -- you're learning something new, and adapting to new techniques. Your first box will not be perfect. Mine came out misshapen, missing beads, rounded corners, and with broken beads. This is all normal.
