So far, the book is great. I have been working with Win 2012 R2 for months, but this book helped me in some new topics. Now, for the people who bought the Kindle Edition on and can't find the online media. Let me give you a step by step directions. You have to go to the section "Free Interactive Online Study Enviroment" on your book. You will see a link to http://sybex.com/go/mcsawin2012r2. There, select this book, MCSA Windows Server 2012 R2 Complete Study Guide: Exams 70-410, 70-411, 70-412, and 70-41. Click Login, then "GET ACCESS CODE".Then on "SELECT YOUR PRODUCT", again, select MCSA Windows Server 2012 R2 Complete Study Guide: Exams 70-410, 70-411, 70-412, and 70-41, type you name, email address, and answer the question ABOUT the book. They will ask you something like: "In Chapter 13, what is the last word in the Summary section at the end of the chapter".Because you have the digital book, type the anwser, and they send you an access code by email. Then go back to the http://sybex.com/go/mcsawin2012r2 and then you will have access to: Practice Exams, Assessment Test, Chapter Tests, Flashcards, and the Video or Audio included.See attached screenshot. Hope that helps!
First of all, I am writing this as someone who has earned their MCSA certification after working my way through THIS book. I took my third test just yesterday and passed, and it's a great feeling! In my opinion, the Server 2012 MCSA is more difficult to achieve than for previous versions of Windows Server. Powershell is a big reason for this; it is emphasized heavily in the new exams. It is the most feature-rich of any previous Microsoft server OS, and believe me, Microsoft wants to make sure that you know how to use all the new features, and they test you on it! Will Panek has written a comprehensive volume that covers all three exams: 410, 411, and 412. He goes into each feature in depth with plenty of screenshots and examples. Also, not many authors will communicate with their readers, but Will does. I emailed him one day a few months back just to see if I would get a response, and I was overwhelmed by his willingness to not only reply back the first time, but answer questions, explain difficult procedures, and even give plain old-fashioned pep talks and encouragement when I thought I couldn't pass.
I waited till I took the first exam to review this book. This book is well written and a joy to read. Its rare for a technical book to be this pleasant to read. So I read the first nine chapters and took the 410 exam. Unfortunately though, I failed. I was feeling good after reading this book from cover to cover. I was doing well on all their practice exams, scoring 100 on almost all of them. I thought I knew everything I needed to know to pass the 410 exam. Going through the first five questions on the actual exam, I knew right away I was in trouble.I felt like I was maybe taking the wrong exam. I continued with the exam but it didn't get any better. So many things weren't covered in the book. Here's what I think about this book. It claims it covers 100% of all the exam objectives. Yes this is true. The book "touched" upon every exam objectives BUT it didn't cover everything about all of those exam objectives. From my experience, it wasn't even close.I was lucky enough to have good guessing skills to actually almost pass but no cigar. While I don't discourage anyone from buying this book (because you would learn something), I would caution those who will rely only on this book.
So far so good... easy to follow and what I did not expect was the amount of coverage over every little feature, but I figure if you are going to master your craft--this is the way. I would definitely recommend for someone who wants to learn the ins-and-outs of Server 12 R2.I can't speak for people who have previous experience and need a supplemental guide...this may be what you need, but then again you may not want to filter through so much info.I was able to register my book and get access to the e-environment...includes flashcards, a few comprehensive practice exams, and some chapter quizzes as well.
This book weighs a ton... Now I am wishing I would have bought it in Kindle form, since most of my reading is done in bed and it's pretty unwieldy to have to hold in that position. Thus far, I am pretty satisfied with the content. The process for redeeming the online content wasn't very intuitive, though. I had to search on the web a bit and found that you have to register on the website listed in the book and it will ask you some questions about the content of the book to verify you are entitled to access the bonus/supplemental materials. Looking forward to rounding out my studies and testing out, since I have it on my calendar to get my MCSE/Private Cloud this year.
I'm not sure why this book recieved such high reviews. I bought it based on the rating. So far, I read everything under 70-410 and i was hoping it would help me pass the exam along with supplement materials. You will not pass the exam with just this book alone so don't waste time using this as your main source. This book fails to go into details. After taking the test, I realized it doesn't focus enough on power shell commands or GUI interfaces that you will come across on the test. Either the exam covers too much in details or this book lacks in detail. Either way, the test is not a straight shoot. You will have to dig in multiple areas of the exam objectives to pass.Overall, this book is only good for a basic overview of the exam objectives. It is good at summarizing. You will definitely need to look elsewhere for more details. I learned more going over free TechNet articles that are listed on the MS Learning Wiki page for 70-410. Overall, I do not recommend this book.
