Feel like a geek but stumped by the Unix/Linux-command-line environment? Before diving into the details of HOW to use each command, this book's first chapter explains WHY everything is seems so "weird" to a child of the point-and-click era: "Unix commands were developed to be cryptic because it was developed by researches for researchers and [long commands] demanded more time for typing [and] editing..." Somehow, in all my years trying to understand "why everything had to be so hard" in a Unix/Linux command-line environment, no one had ever thought to bring up this key point - that back in the days before mice, you couldn't interact with software by clicking a button that spelled out what you wanted to do in plain English - hence an interface with your software where you tell it what to do by typing things like "-x -3 -er2".I love this book for breaking down every concept it introduces with such key insights about "why" things are the way they are for the modern computer user. It also doesn't take up a lot of room on the bookshelf, as computer references go.This is one of the computer reference books I plan to keep forever. Well done, Mr. Venkateshmurthy.
