I found Book 1 to be very helpful to me as a beginning serious collector and Book 2 has been much more so as my collection has grown. I loved the marks section with color photographs of marks and have used it in dating some of my cup and saucer sets. I also found the sketches of shapes and handles of cups to be useful in descriptions for the inventory of my collection. Pictures of old trade cards are a charming touch and reproduced old catalog pages, extra photographs and added information greatly add to the enjoyment of this book for a novice or experienced collector.
This is a great collection of the different types of teacups. Very helpful to an avid china collector! There are not very many books in this area of antiques, so I was thrilled to find this first edition. The second edition is also wonderful too. Highly recommend for the novice collector, to the avid ones!
This book is not helpful in identifying teacups at all. Of the thousands and thousands of styles and designs of teacps that exist, this book shows pictures of only about 200. Most of the pictures are dark or unclear and no maker's marks are shown. This book is basically just one person's collection and is no help to other collectors.
As an avid collector of antique cups & saucers, I found this book to be a delightful read! The history and data provided on shapes, decoration, early manufacturers, and "hot collectibles" is very informative. I read with interest the section on "cabinet cups & saucers" highly treasured by advanced collectors. I've never seen a $1,500 teacup! I particularly enjoy the detailed descriptions of each cup & saucer. This has been a great reference tool as I try to describe & value my personal collection. (The most recent edition has been updated with 1999 values.) I also gave this book to my mother for Christmas. She loved it. She gave me my first teacup and has a wonderful collection. Finally, the photographs are beautiful. I enjoy flipping through the book while sipping a cup of tea as I daydream about uncovering a "Sevres" cup & saucer at a garage sale...
Susan and Jim you are wonderful! I purchased you first edition and was thrilled with it and this one is even better. My last review (on the first book) requested more and you did it! This one has useful information on the different shapes, a little more history and an excellent section on marks. This is an excellent source for the beginning and the more avid and advanced collector. My first review requested a whole series of books on cups and saucers -- please do more. Beautifully done and the color photography is gorgeous! Can't say enough about this book.
Too bad someone didn't bother to edit this book - especially as it is a SECOND EDITION! It not only is missing 20 pgs (in the early 100s from what I recall - I sent book back and hope for a refund), it also had 20 duplicate pages! I can't believe NO ONE here who raved about this book noticed this! It's one thing to buy it and get pleaure looking at pictures of someone's pretty cups, but quite another when you are doing research and spending money on books! Checking for brands in the index and not finding a page listed is how I found this gross error! A lot of cups would have been covered on those 20 missing pages. The seller I purchased book from said "it was publishing error and not picked up on reprint" and had the nerve to ask ME to "let him know if I find one that was corrected" as he said all books are like this. Unless the seller is misrepresenting...I say "BOO" to the editors/publishers - no excuse on 2nd edition!)
This book renewed my interest in my cup and saucer collection and has been extremely helpful to me in identifying and valuing sets I already had and many others I've acquired since I purchased the book. The pictures are good, the authors are very knowledgeable and are working on a Volume II, possibly due out this Fall.
This book is great for finding different cup and saucer types.I would like to have had more information on pottery markings included in the book. Wish the authors had a web-site for questions.
