There are a lot of books about formatting, but this book provides everything you need - including free downloadable templates - for formatting illustrated children's books or comic books that fill the entire page on a Kindle Fire.You can also have panel magnification on a comic book page, if you want it.In the book, you'll also find links to the free software you need to edit your templates and illustrations.I want to thank Charles Spender for creating this book.Note: If you read the book on your computer browser in the Cloud Reader, you can click the links and download the templates directly to your computer. I don't know how you would download the templates to your Kindle and then transfer to your computer without a lot of extra effort.Update, November 22, 2012: Customizing the downloaded templates was easy. Instructions in the book are very clear. Don't let the fear of html code stop you from creating your book. I believe anyone can.
By using Formatting of Children's Books and Comics for the Kindle I was able to convert my iPad kids' book to a Kindle Fire picture book that uploaded to the Kindle store on the first try. (I won't go into the iPad/iBooks Author part of this process here, but I might do so on my blog.)This concise book takes you through all the steps needed to convert your jpegs into a fixed-layout kids' book .mobi file for the Kindle (I had the story text already screencaptured on the jpegs and used the simplest template). You do not need to be afraid of HTML or CSS because the author provides free templates and instructions for how to edit them to fit your book. If you follow his steps you won't have to deal with any other EPUB instructions or software.Spender provides very understandable instructions for resizing jpegs using a free graphics program. I could not have done this quickly (or maybe at all) without his instructions.It's worth repeating: All Spender's instructions are very clear.What worked for me was to have Spender's book open on my daughter's iPad (using the Kindle for iPad app) while I resized the jpegs and edited templates on my laptop. (I downloaded Spender's free fixed-layout templates from the KDP forum. Spender lists the link above in his "Book Description." Look for FormattingChildren'sBooksandComics.zip on that page of the forum. You can also download the templates from within the e-book.)Note:If you have a book with a lot of rich images (I had 34 jpegs in the 600KB range, and a total compiled book size of about 20 MB), the Whispernet delivery fees will push you toward the 30% royalty rate.
This book puts the answers to all your formatting questions for kids books in one place. I have looked over the KDP authors site many times but the tech explanations are hard to understand. Not so with this one. Enjoy!
This book is a must have if you wish to format your kid's book for kindle. The author gives you templates you can used that are fixed format. This means that your picture won;t rotate if you have a tablet. The book also gives you the specific dimensions your images need to be to fit the kindle fire. Very useful and worth the price.
There is so much confusing material, documentation and opinion around what should really be a simple task. This book is clear, concise and easy to read. Everything worked beautifully and I was able to convert the print version of my children's book to Kindle very quickly once I read through this. Thank you Charles Spender!!!
This book was amazing. After pulling my hair out for two days trying to convert my pdf book for kindle, I happened upon this gem. Using the easy to use templates and instructions I was able to build a kindle ebook in under 4 hours. Don't bother looking any further if you are trying to format a children's book for kindle - this is by far the best resource out there!
If you are serious about publishing your comic fixed layout book in Kindle you have to have this book that sells for $0.99 as a real steal or at least it is a very generous gift from Charles Spender the author.If you follow the method Spender proposes you get what you need.I tried Scrivener that it is an excellent writers tool but not good enough for comic fixed layout books. It embeds your full page graphics in text pages where you can't eliminate the margins. On its side, the free templates of Spender puts your full page graphics as background images that show beautifully in the Kindle devices included the Kindle apps.And last but not least with Scrivener I got a File of the two first parts of my book in a 25.5 MB file and the one I got with the Spender method and templates was 3.5 MB. Amazing! to say the least.On the other side Kindle Comic Creator, that also show your graphics full size and is very easy to use, does not have the ability to create Table of Contents (TOC) in a simple and efficient way and when you try to search for something in your book the app crashes.So, the Spender method is the best until now and It will be difficult to surpass.I just suggest some changes to the templates: to give a nice format to the TOCs and be able to have them in most than one page. Of course if you know HTML and CSS you can modificate the templates by yourself but it is not so easy and requires good knowledge and practice os such languages.Thanks Charles Spender for your generosity and efficient work, you save my life as fixed layout books pretending author and I will have my book in the Kindle store sooner and better than I expected.
