Being There: How To Love Those Who Are Hurting

Everyone has friends or family who suffer from sickness, disability, depression, or the death of a loved one. Often times, the people who love the hurting also struggle in their own unique ways. They tend to suffer in silence and without much support from others. Writing from the unique perspective of one who needs extra help on a daily basis, Dave Furman offers insight into the support, encouragement, and wisdom that people need when helping others. Furman draws on his own life experiences, examples from the Bible, and wisdom from Christians throughout history to address the heart and ministry of those who are called to serve others. Deeply personal and powerfully pastoral, this book points listeners to the strength that only God can provide as they love those who are hurting. Afterword written by Gloria Furman, the author's wife.

In full disclosure: Dave is a dear friend who God used to uniquely shepherd me during a portion of my post-college days in opening my heart to more fully treasure Christ through global missions. Having myself been in pastoral ministry since 2006, my family has both prayerfully and financially supported Dave & Gloria in their ministry to the people of Dubai since prior to their heading to Dubai in 2008. That having been said, I would joyfully and confidently recommend this book even if I didn't already have the utmost admiration and respect for this dear brother.Paul Tripp has said that suffering is the common denominator of people living in a fallen world. You're either in the middle of suffering, it's just on the horizon, or you know someone else who is currently in the thick of it. Given this commonality, Being There is an invaluable resource in that it beautifully and practically equips and bolsters those who are administering care and love to people enduring suffering. Dave's story is one of a person who ministers in the midst of chronic nerve pain. As someone who daily endures suffering while seeking to minister to others, his perspective throughout this book isn't theoretical. He lives both sides this daily. What is maybe most helpful about Being There is how Dave grounds and grows a better love for those in the midst of pain from the fruitful root of the Gospel. Not only is there intensely practical help to be found in this book (both in what to do, and what not to do), but there is ample encouragement for your own soul.
