Mercer Mayer's Little Critter, like Clifford the Big Red Dog, Curious George and Berenstain Bears, are all staples of children's young reading. I was always partial to Little Critter because that is what my parents would read to me as a child growing up. All 4 series have a timeless quality about them. The Fall Festival is basically Little Critter and his family visiting the pumpkin patch. The story is a fun little tale of all the things you can do in autumn season down on the farm. Drinking apple cider, picking apples in an orchard, picking a pumpkin in the pumpkin patch and pumpkin launching, I think all of us have some Little Critter in us when we were children curious and adventuresome. The colorful pictures easily tell the story with short sentences and text to keep your child's attention on the story. It is a harmless little tale wonderful for the whole family. I would rate this a 4 star children's book I read it to my daughter often.
My crew has always loved and enjoyed the Little Critter books. This Fall Festival one is great especially for this season of the year. It is an excellent way to encourage reading with reluctant readers, too. The story is good and the pictures are wonderful. Whenever you see the "I Can Read" sign, you know that your less than book lover will enjoy the book - or at least in my opinion, I have found that to be true. Usually these books can 'hook' a reader and that is a good thing. Little Critter just makes people happy and it is a lot of fun. Mercer Mayer has done a very good job in creating the Little Critter books for young people.
The price is high for an all paper booklet but it is in the tradition of Little Critter and my granddaughters enjoyed the story and wanted it read over and over. Durability would be an issue if you let your little ones handle the books unsupervised as they will tear easy.
My students love these (just like my own kids did a LONG time ago)! Easy to read to 3-5 year olds with a short attention span. Very engaging story. A good addition to any Pre-Kinder Teacher's library...
I bought this book to replace one that we were told my daughter lost. After I purchased it and sent it in, they "found" the one that had been lost. No complaint, though, since we love Mercer Mayer stories! My kids love reading these books!
I bought this book last year, my daughter was 16 months old and not interested. I put it up and pulled it out again this fall, as she is 2 now. It is her new favorite book and we have LOTS. The Little Critter books have very detailed illustrations and I think that is her favorite part. I ask her to locate different things in the pictures and she loves finding them (little pumpkin, big pumpkin, apples, etc.) We've read it so many times that she has some of the pages memorized and will tell me what they say. She just loves it and you can't go wrong here!
I got this book for my son right after he started kindergarten and he really liked it. Humorous as always, the Critter family drives out to the country for the Fall Festival to see the leaves changing colors, eat apples, drink apple cider, go on a tractor hay ride, pick out pumpkins, play horseshoes and more. Of course, Little Critter eats too many apples and gets a tummy ache at the end, but everyone still had a great time. A book we will use for years as my son's reading skills improve and he can read on his own more.
...but other Little Critter books such as Just So Thankful and The Lost Dinosaur Bone have better stories with more interesting vocabularies. I understand I Can Read books are designed for early readers and this is GREAT for that audience. If you're used to the other books such as the ones mentioned above, you should be aware that the detail in the story here will be lacking. This book is all about driving home reading skills. As usual, though, the illustrations are terrific. If you're looking for a nice Autumn theme, this is great as long as you don't mind the simply told tale.
