I have been a doll-maker and collector for almost 50 years .. and "purely primitive DOLLS" by Barb Moore is absolutely the best-written, most informative of any instructions I have ever come across. Easy to read, easy to understand, easy to follow! Barb Moore has shared a wealth of doll-making talent with us. Her book overflows with inspiration and photos, ideas, tips, instruction. It is much like having her right there with you every step of the way on your 'doll-making journey'. She has touched on every aspect of doll-making .. designing, fabric, cutting and sewing, unique ways of aging your doll to look as if it is a hundred years old or more. Great advice on stuffing dolls, creating adorable faces, dressing them, hair techniques and even making primitive-looking accessories to give each doll a special character .. to 'bring them to life'. I was so disappointed when I received the book. The author has a few good tips about making primatives, but not many. The way she prepares fabric to make the dolls is tedious and unnecessary. She normally uses buttons for the eyes, but some embroidery would be nice. The dolls don't have that endiring and quaint look of most prims. The only doll I like is on the cover, but any knowledge is helpful and I'm glad I purchased the book.
I really enjoyed this book, even though it is geared toward people with no sewing or dollmaking experience. As an experienced dollmaker, I was interested in the specific techniques in making primitive dolls, and I was not disappointed. The author gave lots of information and examples, and explained all the techniques thoroughly.
Purely Primitive Dolls is a great instructional tool for creating old-fashioned dolls. The instructions are clear and accompanied by crisp and plentiful photographs. The narrative is upbeat and encouraging. The author makes plenty of suggestions for putting your own touches on your creations.
I really like the layout of this book. Hopefully I'll be able to make a primitive doll with the help of this book. I already have the desire to make a primitive doll and this book makes me excited about giving it a try. Instructions seem pretty clear and simple to me.
Hard to find "How to" for primitive dolls that aren't sickeningly sweet sappy or filled with stylized patterns. This is truly a primitive doll book with great photos, instructions and ideas.
Being new to doll making , i am dissapointed with this book. Very limited instrictions , and not a single pattern! The author doesn't "believe" in giving her readers a pattern, just vague ideas. She is very talented AND has made a lot of money from her craft. Yet won't help the people who spend their cash to accomplish their goals.
