This book does offer the fundamentals of computers, but for the price of this book you could get a book from your local library and not even spend a dime and still have an updated book. If you have to buy this book then I recommend buying it used, because the book is based on Windows Vista. It mentioned Windows 7 as the future operating system. I am sure you can learn a thing or two about commands in command prompt and such. All in all this can help you with the certification exam, but I can't stress enough to practice, practice and practice.
For whatever reason, the powers that be mandated this text for our Operating Systems class. Pure torture! Outdated! Not proof read properly nor ordered in certain sections. My class, because of this book and accompanying asinine lab manual, combined with a first-time clueless professor, became an impediment to certification.Much of the lab work is just busy work. Why? Why have us look up the price of old Apple garbage that isn't sold. Pure torture. A lab that is estimated to take 45 minutes takes two hours because of the dated material and because the answers have to be typed in a certain format. I hate this book. I hate it!Half the class dropped. The others have given up their weekends to spend all day Saturday and Sunday on a BS book still focused on Vista. WTF! This should have been a straightforward, simple class. Why is this book still on the market?BTW, I have yet to miss a point on any exam, lab or homework assignment. I have A's in my courses, but I couldn't take another semester like this. If a class lists a book written by this author, I will wait until a more reasonable text assignment is made.AWFUL! AWFUL! AWFUL!
A great value. I purchased this book for a class, but have used it here at home more than for at school. A great book for fixing many errors users may come across while using different versions of Windows. This book has helped me fix three different computers running Windows in the past month. A must have technical book for anyone doing regular computer maintenance.
Probably more the professors fault than anything, but I got this to go with my A plus certification class in 2012 and wow, half the book was completely out of date! The labs are not very descriptive and a lot of it is just step by step how to do something...but not really telling you what you are doing. Boo hoo.
This is an excellent work.The text is clear, technical, correctly illustrated and nevertheless easily accessible.The equipments and referenced softwares are very recent.To summarize: an indispensable book for every apprentice IT.I recommend the book of the same author dedicated to the material.
5th edition was outdated but still provided good fundamentals... quite surprised the college didn't have us use 6th edition which was out at the time the semester started.
This book is a great book if you are trying to get your certification but realize that you will need the hardware book also. A combo package would have been nice.
The book is very good, and sadly, my class is using this to learn when Windows XP and Vista are so out-dated. But, still a great reference book for techs.
