Moser Artistic Glass, Edition Two

This revised, updated edition of Moser - Artistry in Glass contains chapters from the first book, additional text on post-WWII production, the historical development of Moser's decorative styles, updated information on factory marks, and careful identification of similar products made by Loetz, Webb & Sons, Riedel and other firms. The ten chapters of narrative are thoroughly detailed and well written, covering Karlsbad's historical position as a central glassmaking city, and revealing how the firm has remained established, even beyond WWII and the collapse of Communism. There is splendid black and white photography - not previously shown - illustrating all kinds of the classical and figural motifs in which Moser specialized. Also present is an expanded 80-page section of color featuring new pieces not shown or identified in the first book. These color pages reflect an impressive Bohemian and Czechoslovakian repertoire (including cameo-frieze, intaglio-cut, rare-earth doped, enameled and engraved), shown at a large enough size for readers to view their intricate detail. Includes 1997-98 value guide. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

The same author wrote "Moser Glass: Klabin Collection" in 2007. That book is awesome. It is the most elaborate display of Moser glass. But it costs more and does not show the beautiful glass that non-millionaires can enjoy. This earlier volume is slanted more in the direction of showing the variety of colors produced for one style (such as juice glasses and wine goblets) and the varied decorative styles that this maker produced. There is plenty of text for those interested in details and some black and white photos as illustrations. The 80 page color section is outstanding. With usually 3 photos per page and descriptions that include date of manufacture and size, you progress from 1840 to 1975 (with the 1880s dominating). The photos are not as large and therefore not as detailed as the Klabin Collection but there are far more of them. I chose to purchase this book because it had so many visually pleasing items in contrast to "over the top", "how much can we cram onto one piece" designs. There are some examples of those items in this book so it is a good compromise.

I bought this book for my husband who recently has had an interest in antique glass. This book is beautiful and informative with great color pihotographs. We also met the author at an appraisal day and found him to be intelligent and charming and eager to share his significant knowledge about antique glass.
