The main title should make the word Vintage and Collectible more prominent. Except for a small number of extremely high-end "collectible" vintage guitars, the price guide is only current to 2012. And it lacks pricing information on many high-end makers that have been around for 20+ years. So unless you own an FGM (Fender, Gibson, or Martin) that is worth more than your car - or maybe your house - you will not find much new here. For many non-FGM brands, there is no recent or relevant information. For instance, Framus has been manufacturing high-end electrics for 18+ years, and there is no information at all in the guide. Only one Takamine Acoustic is rated, yet every Taylor ever made is in the book, even their lowest end offerings.I want to be able to obtain prices for my entire collection, not just my 40+ year-old old Gibsons.I know, this guide is published by Vintage Guitar magazine. But current subscribers like me know they cover much more, and expect that in what is advertised as an all-inclusive Price Guide that they would sponsor.
It is very good for your common guitars, amps... especially for the price. It mentions, but does not value less popular guitar makers... there are better guides out there for that.Great price at .com ($19.00, no tax and free shipping if you bump your order up to $25.00) as opposed to ordering it from Vintage Guitar, $25.00 plus shipping, tax ?????)
DISAPPOINTING to say the least. The section on guitars was quite good but, I'm not interested in guitars. I'm a bassist and needed information on electric basses. The section on Fender basses was good but there was no information at all on the majority of currently and previously available brands. The section on Warwick basses had NOTHING, with regard to values, on any models they produce. As Warwick is a very popular brand and has been around for over ten years, I found it surprising that nothing about them was included apart from telling you it was started by the son of the man responsible for bringing us Framus basses and that they also make amps. If I were looking for information on manufacturer's histories there are many other references available that contain more than a single paragraph. The section on amplifiers was as disappointing as the bass section. Go to a bookstore and peruse a volume of this "guide" for the information you seek (if it's there) and save yourself the cost. This guide was not worth the price in my opinion.
For years the Gruhn's guide to Vintage guitar has been a great resource to collectors and sellers alike, Then they went and changed it's format in the latest edition. I feel this book has passed that book by as the go to resource for collectors and sellers alike. Listings are in alphabetical order based on brands and a different section for each type of instrument. Electric guitars, basses, acoustics and so on. It covers various types of instruments including mandolins and banjos which i also play. It also has photos of various instruments which the Gruhn book doesn't. This can help in identifying an instrument you may have. I highly recommend it.
Authoritative and fairly complete. Some prominent custom luthiers were not rated which is disappointing, but all the high production brands are well represented. Some limited editions and new models don't show up, but again, it's as complete as one could expect.No price guide can be 100% accurate. Prices vary by region. I use this guide in combination with online comps at reputable sites. Craigslist and eBay listings are NOT valid comps. People can put merchandise in at any price they choose, and most times, they bear no relation to what it's truly worth. I guess checking actual sale prices on eBay is okay, but I don't have the time (or software) to do that.
My main criticism of this book has always been the lack of information on some of the more popular vintage Guild guitars and the way the entire Guild section has been constructed. I pointed this out to one of the authors in 2010 but nothing has changed in this edition. Some of the smaller-body acoustics from Guild, like the M-20 and F-20 are missing altogether. And why are D-40 models among others listed in two separate places and on two different pages? It makes no sense not to have notations directing the reader to the other model years. This book probably would not have any value for the average musician or retail consumer, but for guitar dealers this book is an excellent tool to have in your arsenal. Just remember prices of vintage guitars can vary well beyond the average ranges listed in this guide.
This is kind of the "gold standard" for vintage guitar prices, but not perfect. I think it is still the best being published now though. Some models of guitars are not listed, but most are, unless they are very rare. The prices are well researched, but don't always jive with what vintage guitars are going for on Ebay. Since it is published once a year though, it is possible a vintage guitar will have a spike in price, sometimes because a famous player makes people scramble for a certain guitar. I'm sure after Jack White became popular, the price of his Airline went sky high. I don't think every price guide could be perfect though, since a near mint guitar with all the original paperwork could command a premium over the high listing.
