This book is well written and well organized - I applaud the author for this. The author covers a lot of ground so this book may not be your best choice as a first book on Solr unless you are prepared to do a lot of additional research while reading it. I've been working with Solr and other Apache technologies for several years now and I've consumed many books on these topics. This is one of the better ones. I bought this book for 2 purposes; to upgrade my skills from Solr 4.x to 5.x and for chapter 11 which covers Semantic Search. I read and worked through the entire book. The book met my first objective well. I worked through the schema-less examples and changes to solrconfig.xml which were well explained. Chapter 7 was one of my favorites; the author did a good job on advanced querying. Several chapters also have Frequently Asked Question which are worth the time to read.The 4 stars was because the chapter on Semantic Search didn't help me as much as I wanted. I really wanted more details on integrating UIMA annotators and Solr. The book explains the concepts which I already understand. I would have liked a deep dive on integration of OpenNLP and Solr as well. That being said, the book gives you enough of a start to complete these on your own - I just wanted a step by step prescription I guess:)
