Coffee is the lifeblood of the urban adventurer, the 9 to 5 crowd, the far flung romantic and the millions that rely on coffee's delivery of invigorating brain juice conveyed in a flavorful mouth hug. Ryoko Iwata explains coffee's goodness in brilliant clarity second only to her dose of clowning, playfulness in Coffee Gives Me Superpowers. In the succinct 93-page illustrated primer, Iwata covers everything you ever wanted to know about the coffee bean (it's a fruit!), who drinks the most, what your drink says about you (watch out soymilk drinkers!), when to drink the hot stuff, who exactly is Joe and how much will, in fact, kill you. Iwata's crispy details sourced from all over are packaged with Matt Inman's (The Oatmeal) cheeky and, often, mocking illustrations. Coffee as a boyfriend? Covered! Jabs at Starbucks? Of course! Silly myths (like, keeping coffee in the freezer)? Debunked.Coffee Gives Me Superpowers humorously and neatly satisfies our natural curiosity into the second most traded product in the world!

Beautifully crafted and well researched graphic design book about the world's favorite caffeinated beverage. This is the perfect gift for coffee-loving friends, or even a treat to yourself to learn something new. If you're a fan of comics and graphic design you'll appreciate Ryoko's skill at laying out information, and her sense of humor makes the content extra fun to consume. A really enjoyable read!

4.5 Stars Hilarious! This book is a great gift idea for coffee lovers and perfect as a coffee table book. There's lots of fun and interesting info and even some picture guides on coffee beverages for beginners. The illustrations are pretty cool too. It ended too soon! Also, you should drink a cup while reading this...Net Galley Feedback

I first heard of this book through The Oatmeal, of which I'm a pretty big fan. I ordered it not for myself, though, but for my Mom, and I used it as inspiration for her Mother's Day gift this year, which was a collection of several of her favorite coffees (and some new ones to try), accompanied by some coffee bars and coffee-flavored chocolate bars. My Mom, who says she "lives for coffee" isn't exaggerating by much, and she LOVED reading this book while munching and sipping away at the contents of her present. We both agreed that Coffee Gives Me Superpowers was just the right mix of entertaining and educational, which made it a fun way to learn about her favorite beverage.

Description:This book is an illustrated book full of beautiful graphic designs, flow charts and pictures of the most addicting beverage on the planet! COFFEE!I was recently in Barnes and Noble and I stumbled upon this book and HAD to buy it. It was the CUTEST book I have ever seen. I cannot tell you how many times I have just picked up this book to look at it. It's seriously the cutest.I am OB-sessed with good reads and coffee. What's better than a good book about my favorite drink?Impression:I love love love this book. I can't get over it. It's beautiful. It's cute. It's adorable. It's visually pleasing. It's fun. This book is definitely a must have if you're overly obsessed with coffee. You cannot look at this book and not smile. Not only is the book cutesy, it's informative. I learned a lot of facts and statistics that I did not know before! The author did a great job at researching the effects of coffee on your brain. The graphics and illustrations made me laugh. This book would be an amazing gift for a coffee lover, or somebody who doesn't take life too serious. It's goofy and cute. 5 Stars!*FTC Disclaimer: I purchased this book with my own money!*I posted a review on this book on my blog at

This is a beautifully illustrated and designed book that's an absolute pleasure to flip through! It's loaded with terrific trivia that will make you think, including some real surprise facts. I bought this little gem as a birthday gift for a good friend who is an avid reader. It turned out to be a perfect choice. He normally leans towards somewhat heavy material, like history, politics, and philosophy - but also loves a good cup of coffee! I think this was just a real fun, lighthearted change of pace for him, and he absolutely raved about how much he enjoyed reading through it. Sometimes we all just need to lighten up a little and curl up with a good, fun read that's entertaining and doesn't take itself, the subject matter, and its audience too seriously. Ryoko Iwata's book definitely does the trick.

This is a very nice coffee table book that tells you about coffee and caffeine in full page illustrations. The information provided is the factoid such as how much coffee the average American drinks, which country drinks the most coffee, who the "Joe" is, etc, which might appear in the Trivial Pursuit. It will not take more than 30 minutes to read through the book, but the book is cheap (less than ten bucks), and so the money is well spend.

If you aren't trying to take this book too seriously, then you'll have a blast. Mathew Inman (aka The Oatmeal) illustrates much of this book. It has a lot of fun infographics and charts but it is not a reference book. For that you would want to read 'Uncommon Grounds' all 800+ pages. For a 100 page, cutely drawn, fun little 'coffee table' book this is a winner. It's selling for under $10 and well worth it.
