This is my first adventure with Jack and Annie and their Tree House. I will readily admit that I was mesmerized with the action and adventure they encountered in the Yucatan Peninsula. Oh my, just thinking of going on a trip like this makes me jealous! Starting from Frog Creek, PA, Jack and Annie both end up in Cozumel, Mexico. If you think that is an exciting beginning for them, it is absolutely nothing compared to what happens to them next!Thankfully, Teddy the Sorcerer from Camelot has given them three magical gold coins to use for having fun. An error at the beginning of their trip transports them to the 'then instead of now'. The young reader will experience sharks, gain knowledge about the Mayan culture, experience a trip through the Forest of Walking Trees, visit the House of Columns, go through the Underworld, meet Great Sun of Palenque (King) and his daughter Heart of the Wind. In addition to the history of the Mayan civilization and their main accomplishments, the descriptions are excellent throughout this book. A couple come to mind and the first being the composition of the coral reefs. The second is the descriptions of the dress of the Mayan dancers as they are filled with vibrant colors. .The ending contains a real surprise about Heart of the Wind. All in all, an excellent book which the author states has been written for ages 7 - 10 and grades 2 - 5. The drawings are also extremely well done and greatly enhance the text. Most highly recommended.
We have read all of the magic Treehouse Books and some more than once. We preorders this one and looked forward to receiving the book when it came. I would give the others 50-odd books in this series 5 stars but this one will get 2 from us. We have no idea why the book is named 'shadow of the shark' if the shark is in less then 1/10 of the book.. Besides that it was a marketing ploy by the publisher. Jack and Annie's adventure in Ancient Mayan civilization seems like enough of a pull to us. Why make up the shark scheme? A Mayan girl who grows up to be the leader of her people in a patriarchal society seems like a great reason to buy the book. Would have preferred that the shark garbage was edited out. (Also not a great idea for children who swim in the ocean to think about terrifying shark attacks all the time...but some may disagree...). Also we have no idea why two kids who have traveled all over the world and throughout time would be looking forward to an all-inclusive resort vacation. This development seemed ridiculous. What got us in the end is the use of technology (a cell phone) to solve the story. There have been so many MTH stories where Jack and Annie's dress and personal items have been completely transformed into something of the period they traveled. That they would introduce a Mayan princess to a cell phone seems ridiculous. We don't appreciate that ingenuity. We found ourselves longing for the Jack and Annie stories of the past where the reader was transported to a new time and place and when our main characters still retained a childhood innocence. Are the Merlin Missions a thing of the past? It was as if Mary Pope Osborne had taken a vacation to the Mayan Rivera and someone else wrote this book.
Okay the description for this book is all about Jack and Annie and a shark attack on their dream vacation. Spoiler alert: the book is about ancient Mayans. There is one chapter called " attack", but it has very little about sharks at all. For my son, this book was a "ripoff" and the front picture lied. Generally we are huge fans of Mary Pope Osborn, but she really disappointed us this time.
Wow! What an adventure story! I found it hard to not finishquickly reading this particular ebook and with great illustrations in pictures and words. I hereby highly recommend this ebook for young and old who loves adventure stories where one can learn about other cultures, etc. And of course because of this I feel it needed a five star rating. Super job Mary Pope! By Angela
It's a really awesome book. It told me something about the people of those old times and made me compare them to the ones of today. Like how people thought that women couldn't be rulers. Today, people doubt this thought.
My son loves all of the Magic Tree House books! I recommend them all to children who are learning how to read...maybe 1-3rd grade? The books take facts and mix them with fiction to create a really interesting read.
My 2 daughters and I have been reading the Magic Tree House series for over 5 years now. I think I started when my oldest was in kindergarten (my youngest is 20 months age difference). I truly believe that this is one of those books that can be understood by littler kids while still enjoyed by older kids. Actually, I eagerly anticipate the next book as much as my girls do! All the books in the series are strong and deliver on content while being very educational in an absolutely non-boring way and are also funny! The characters are strong, smart, polite children who are a great role model to grow up with! I love characters like that. I have read to my children from birth and still read aloud to them (one is 12 1/2 and the other is 11 years old). This series is one we still read -- we have all the books. I honestly believe that this tradition of reading aloud is one of the reasons that both my girls score exceptionally high on test scores for reading (they both are at reading levels in the upper grades levels of high school). This is a great series to start if you are looking to read to either your son or daughter and want to instill a love of books.
