We are using "The Magnificent Obsession" in a weekly women's Bible study. It is a study in the life of Old Testament Abraham, in the book of Genesis. This participant guide is best used with the DVD, and/or companion book by the same title. Anne is a gifted communicator and strong in Bible truth. This is the second study series we have used by Anne Graham Lotz. That shows how much the women enjoy her. The Bible study approach for students is challenging. Each week the same format for personal study is used: read several assigned verses of Scripture that are included in the participants guide, then write down the facts observed, followed by a column of writing down "What does God's word mean?" (what lessons do you see?), then "What does God's word mean to me?" which is rephrasing the lessons from step 2 into questions you might ask yourself or someone else, and the final step is "How will I respond to God's word?". The homework is divided up into 5 daily assignments, and it probably takes 2-3 hours per week to do the study. The study is highly recommended, though I enjoy the DVD more than the homework assignments. One of the beauties of the participant's guide is the discussion it promotes when the women meet together.
At first, I did not like the time required to do each days lesson. Towards the second week, I was beginning to enjoy. Going over each passage, made me slow down and think about the story. I ended up cross referencing and really learning a lot. Having to paying attention to the story and the details, it showed me how good God is to us. How He moves despite ourselves. I found God in the details.
This book is so biblical and our group is learning so much about God, themselves and how to pursue a deeper relationship with God. I would highly recommend this book if you are seeking how to have a deeper relationship with God.
Highly recommend this study to anyone who truly wants to know God more. God used this study, along with Anne's words on the DVD to speak to my heart in an amazing way. I am continuing to use the bible study techniques that Anne used in this study and my relationship with God is growing closer each day.
This is the first item I have received since ordering from that I have disappointed with.It was written in, and being a work book it was not use full at all.I now have to type everything.Sorry for the bad review, but next time be honest that a work book was written in.
Unless you are willing to really put in the time and effort for the specific way that Anne teaches us to do the Bible study part; don't bother with this. It's a new discipline to do the thorough examination and explanation of the Scriptures in the way she is teaching--so unless you are willing to put in the time and the discipline, this will frustrate you instead of enlightening you. On the flipside, if you ARE going to strive each day to work on the Biblical learning, this will be a good, "stretching" resource for you.
This is a Bible Study that teaches you how to study the Bible! The obsession is to love G-D like Abraham did, in order to become a Friend of G-D.
Great Book. Anne Graham Lotz really puts into words the chasing after God. Recommend this read for anyone who desires God
