If you're a coin dealer this book is simply a must - unless you deal only in your local coins (wherever you might be) in which case you have your local coin catalogues which reflect local market prices better. If you're a collector it's just nice to have one to be up to date with current coin production all over the world.The 2014 edition suffers from the same problem as the earlier ones - it is next to impossible to keep track of all the coins issued all over the world. The editors apparently rely on contributors and some of them had other things on their minds during last few months.The results vary from country to country - in case of Germany even coins not yet issued are included. In the Netherlands section the new king is mentioned (though not the coins issued to commemorate his accession) but Ukraine ends as it did in the 2013 edition and so does Thailand, while Belorussian listings end in January 2012. Indian prices are nicely updated (although I would be very happy if somebody went through them once more and tried to establish some order.In short - you won't get a better (at least more up to date) world coin catalogue anywhere but keep your expectations reasonably low because you may discover that your favourite countries have not been updated for a while and you can take a look at (far too numerous) issues from Nauru, Fiji, Palau and other such countries instead while waiting for the 2015 edition.
These books are canonical lists of all the coins on the planet. In tribute, I will say a few words in canonical list format.1. Do not, under any circumstances, pay list price for these things. It has been my experience that your local library book sale is probably giving these away for a dollar. Since they're reference guides, libraries turn these over every single year. Don't pay $50 when you can get them for $1 at the annual booksale. They'll be a year out of date but who cares.2. Remember, the prices listed here are RETAIL prices. If you take your collection to the coin shop to sell it you'll get ... well, not the prices listed.3. These don't change all that much from year to year and when they do it's generally to reflect a change in the price of gold or silver.
Today I received my copy of this book. I usually rely on it for knowledge of new coins being issued. However, this time in the Thailand section there is no improvement over last year. The latest coin listed is from 2010. I have several coins from 2011, 2012, and a few from 2013. None of them are listed in writing or illustrations. , your name has been besmirched. I have not gone over all of the other countries listed. I hope some of them are better represented. Thailand, however, was practically left out of the update. Two thumbs down this time.
Most useful if you are into collecting world coins from any country. Covers most issues, but there were a few issues that I found omitted. But you probably won't notice. Worthwhile coin book.
