Intended for use in an electronics based industrial/manufacturing course, this is an introductory text on process control. It stresses a hands-on operational approach rather than concentrating on mathematical design. The 24 chapters (including one chapter on the CD) can be conbined in various ways to teach courses in several areas including: electrical motors, solid-state variable-speed drives, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), servomechanisms, sensors, and various specialty areas such as instrumentation or process control.In the PLC area, the Allen-Bradley SLC-500 is used for examples. This provides a consistency with the equipment used in today's education and training program.In addition to the chapter on practical applications, the CD that comes with the book also includes a lab manual so the student does not need to purchase another book. The publisher also provides additional material related to this title on their web site, however as of yet the on-line material still refers to the second edition rather than to this new third.This book is well thought out, it's approach is sound. Very little mathematics are used in the book, it is more of a descriptive, hands on book.
I can see where this text can be confusing to those with little or no electrical background. If this is you, you need some background theory before biting off more than you can chew. This text is well designed and explanation is more than necessary (a definite positive). Although this has nothing to do with the text itself, the printer could have used a better quality paper...highlighting areas or lines creates wet areas that bleed through to the other page. Especially colors other than yellow. Either way, it will be in my professional library.
This book is great. A lot of complex things are explained in a easy way and with the minimum amount of calculation, which might put some people off. It's halfway between a technical course and engineering course.This book is heavy on the practical applications, this will boost your knowledge about the subject (as if you had been working in the area for ages). I would like him to write more books.
I purchased this book as a refresher for a new job with a major aircraft manufacturer. I was very pleased with the content and the book's general condition (used). The book was supposed to contain a CD with a final chapter. I was disappointed that it was missing, but that's the risk you take when you buy used products. It wasn't a show-stopper and I am still satisfied with the value!
If you're like me a college student. You would know that paying for classes THEN on top of that ordering books is a money grubbing task. The problem isn't really the class cost but the books that come with them. At the school that I go to this book would have cost me about a $100 more! So knowing me (Cheap), I searched online until I came across and Textbook Rush. I felt like I hit the jackpot and a victory to all the students out that that THINK they have no choice but to pay the School's bookstore price.Book Description: Only wear is the highlighting inside.
