Wine Labels: A Worldwide History

Silver wine labels first made their appearance in the 1730s to identify the contents of unmarked opaque glass wine bottles. Later they adorned clear glass decanters. This book reflects the lively interest of a group of members of the Wine Label Circle who have contributed to the text in accordance with their own specialist expertise. It explores the history of the development of the labels themselves and also of the great collections. It examines in detail makers, places of manufacture and styles. Most of the authors have already written for the journal of the Wine Label Circle on specialist subjects.

This book is NOT about wine labels but rather about BOTTLE tags - particularly those made of silver or other metals that hang around the necks of bottles. It is probably a good guide for collectors of these bottle tags or metal hang-tags but of no use to those interested in paper labels.

"Wine labels" by John Salter (author and editor) is not the kind of book you read from the first to the last page. But it is one you'll constantly open when looking for new treasures on the web. One of those "must have" for collectors. I would just emphasize one negative point: figure and plate captions do not exist, so that you have to look for figure calls in the text. Otherwise a recommended book!

Excellent illustrated study of bottle tags, mostly British and Continental.

I agree with other buyers. I was looking for a book that had pictures of wine labels (the paper label on the bottle). Instead this is a book on what I would consider wine medallions. It is also mostly history and not many pictures, and the pictures there are are in black and white, not color like the cover suggests. This was a gift for my husband and we are both completely disappointed with the book (and the sellers return policy).
