I have an electronics background, and this book is well written and most informative. There is no single book that a vintage-radio hobbyist or enthusiast can claim is the "best," but this book is certainly one of the best. It's nice when an author like Mr. Corbin who has so much knowledge takes the time to put it down in writing so that it can be shared with others.
I found this to be a very good course in radio repair. As an electrical engineer I found the technical information to be well and simply explained, but what I was looking for was the nuts and bolts of old radio technology, something that I've never had a reason to be exposed to. If you want to restore old radios - start with this book.
Good stuff in here. Just that it needs more detail. I'm trying to find books from the experienced restorer on how to start, what to expect, and how to start with a walk-through to the polished case. Didn't quite find it in this book though.
I found Al Cobin's book to be one of the few which gives the beginner the insight required to develop a working knowledge of the subject complicated workings of an antique radio. His writing is directed to you the student in a friendly rather than highly technical manner which encourages you to learn more. I look forward to many more books on this subject.Jack Moir.
I'm still new to restoring and repairing old radios, so I can't give you an expert opinion on this. But based on my first review, it is clear and well illustrated and includes the details you need to fix radios. The author seems to know his business (in fact, that's what his business is)
This book is excellent and containns a great deal of information,However you will have to take time to learn the basics first. I would suggest a basic knowledge by the reader of electricity first.....
Enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone who's considering working on these old tube radios, either for themselves or perhaps for others as well. Mr. Corbin is doubtlessly qualified and has put together a book that will be beneficial in many ways. Some things seem to get repeated several times, but that may be an intentional move to reinforce important points. In addition, I found an occasional mistake in one or two of the schematics, but nothing that would impede learning from this otherwise well done volume.
Well written and easy to understand if you commit the time to it. There is a lot of material here. I recently got into repairing old radios and this helped with understanding them better. I purchased 4 books on the subject and hit the library. This was the most useful to help teach me how they work. I do wish it had a wire spiral binding rather than the plastic though.
