Without doubt the best concise guide to the world's wines - however one cannot really call it a "Pocket Guide" anymore as it now has 336 pages. I used to buy the guide every year from the first one in 1977, but now plan every other year - the first I missed was 2014. Hugh Johnson is one of the most knowledgeable people in the world of wine, and for this guide draws on information from many regional specialists. If one wants to learn about reliable producers and interesting varietals from all over the world, this guide can take you from your current "comfort zone" to many other zones of enjoyment.

Covers a lot of wines, but the details are limited. Heavy use of abbreviations and acronyms. Smallish print. Some informative details of the wineries listed are included as well as an orienting preface and finale. Is organized by country so looking up a wine by country of origin is easy. Hugh Johnson has been publishing these little gems for some time now. My guess is that there is a fair amount of repetition from year to year, but cannot confirm this. Note: the wines listed and considered to be Hugh's "favorites". In my opinion, being a "favorite" is a very subjective conclusion.

This book, published in a new edition every year, is the best one year update on the world's wines there is. Nothing else comes close. It covers every country, and every impotant wine growing region in every country, on planet Earth. I cannot recommend this book too much-I buy the new edition every year. If you are interested in wine at all, this book is a must have.

HJ's pocket wine guide has been my go-to wine purchasing resource for more than 20 years. My palette lines up directly with the HJ tasters so I can trust that if they enjoy a wine, I will too. It takes a bit of time to figure out how to read the symbols but once you do it's easy to use. I don't make any signficant wine purchases w/o consulting this guide.

Can you ever have too much information when it comes to wine? Well if you can, this book comes close. Holy cow did they do their research. My wife always tries to take this with her now whenever we go out for a drink.

This is the annual bible of wine. Any wine in this book you can buy with confidence, as there are only good wines listed in this guide. I always read it. You will not go wrong with Hugh Johnson's Pocket Wine Book.

I have been buying this guide since the 1970s, getting a new one every 4 to 5 years. As many have said, "it has most of the information about wine that anyone is likely to need". Despite growing in size, it still fits OK in a pocket, and is great to carry when buying wine.

Still the best little book of wine knowledge on the planet. Geared more toward International wines, it is nonetheless packed full of essential information on all aspects of wine, from food pairing, temperature, and other tasting tips, vintage charts, and of course the most comprehensive ratings of French wines you could fit in such a little tome.
