Twenty-eight years ago, I was visiting a dear friend who lived in an artist's studio on the Quai St. Michele in Paris, overlooking Notre Dame. I promise you, there is no better view in all of Paris. A bottle of red was produced to celebrate the occasion of my visit. While I have forgotten how that red wine tasted, I will always remember the vintage Zig Zag that was used to open it. I complemented my friend on the fascinating corkscrew and, before I had left his company that day, the corkscrew was mine along with a printed poster of two score similar corkscrews, purchased from one of the print sellers along the quai. With the time that has passed, that single accordion corkscrew has multiplied into a few dozen antiques of similar character. Don Bull's books - World Class Corkscrews and The Ultimate Corkscrew Book - have both guided and inspired this hobby. They have helped me to identify corkscrews I have found and corkscrews that I want to find. You can collect stamps you will never use to mail letters, or coins that you will never spend, but this collection has a unique utility that is hard to not appreciate. And, unlike collecting vintage cars, this hobby is unlikely to lead to divorce.Even if you use a simple barman's lever to access the fruit of the vine, you can appreciate the artistry and the engineering that went into drawing a cork from a bottle. These books are just fun to flip through. I waited tables for many years in college and grad school. I never appreciated the history and ancestry of the tiny tool that I casually slipped into my pocket so many times. Never, that is, before that Zig Zag.
A comprehensive and exhaustive compilation of everything there is to know about corkscrews, from three of the world's leading experts. If it isn't in this book, it hasn't been discovered yet.
