An experienced hand is probably going to find this book a little sparse, but such a person really doesn't need this book, they should be using any of the excellent Oracle manuals that can be had for free just by asking. For the new student or the old student reacquainting themselves with Oracle SQL after a few years away from it, the pace is about right and the info load perfect for the careful reader.I see people complaining that the text is not clear and not easily understood but I have to question that judgement. Perhaps a little less multi-tasking during the book sessions would help (I speak as an easily distracted student myself). I don't know. All I can say is that the text is not dense, the explanations are adequate especially when used as examples for self-study at the computer (i.e. vamping on the theme for a few minutes in the example database that can be downloaded from the address printed on the book cover) and the pacing seems good - if you are a really bright student you can always speed read the bits you "get" but I'd be careful when deciding to do that. There is a large amount of information to be found there and sometimes your assumptions may hide a nifty feature Oracle built in.That said, the book is missing one important piece of information necessary if the student is using a database with schemas other than the test one supplied in the download - the "ALTER SESSION SET CURRENT_SCHEMA = store;" command, which will be needed to get the syntax in the book to work seamlessly. There's also a referential integrity issue that can get in the way of testing the earliest example DELETE command, but that might usefully be seen as a debugging lab after reading on a little. Will the reader benefit from other sources? Of course.
