I started this to read along with the group following on Facebook. I like the short chapters, the reminders to see our husbands in the correct light; the light of scripture.I will say that I personally had an issue theologically with the first couple paragraphs of day 3 but I've never seen anything from the author on Facebook (where I've been following her for some time) otherwise that gave me pause for concern However, her assertion in day 3 that God created Adam because He (God) wanted/needed the companionship, is NOT a biblical one and I think drawing that conclusion is a REALLY bad idea. It seems to insinuate that God was lacking something within Himself that caused Him to "need" this realtionship with man to help out with that deficiency. From the author's other writings online, I've never seen anything of that sort, so again I think this is a departure from her usual. My point being, that if God lacked ANYTHING He would cease to be God. He chose to create man that man might glorify Him, not because He (God) needed or desired someone to hang out with. Her point in this chapter is God created Eve for Adam because Adam needed a companion, totally Biblical and completely true, but adding something about God's relationship to Adam that is not supported by scripture is, in my opinion dangerously misleading to the reader. That is particularly of concern if the book reaches a new Believer. One last thing, same chapter, is the assertion that God "trusted" Adam to name the animals and that they had trust in their relationship. Again, just not biblical in my opinion. Here she was making the point of how important trust is in our marrital relationships.
The first sentence in the introduction of this book is "You are here because God pursued you."What?! I'm not important enough for God to pursue! God has more important things to do than chase a person who isn't really looking for him. That same introduction said " As a Christian and as a wife there is a responsibility to nurture both your relationship with God and your husband. Failure to passionately pursue these relationships will result in isolation."At this point I flipped open the first couple of pages in the book to look for my name. I literally feel like Jennifer wrote this personally for me. Isolation and I.... well... let's just say we are well acquainted. I have never passionately pursued God.As the days went on and I read this devotional, I found myself looking forward to reading the verses and looking at things in a perspective that I've never thought of before.Day 13 had me in tears. I have struggled with pride for as long as I can remember. I have associated pride with good things. We live in a world that treasures pride as a positive attribute. But I will never forget the definition that Jennifer wrote. "Pride is an inflated opinion of oneself, a breeding ground for self deception."That one really hit home.I started praying for the first time in years. I mean really really praying. I used to go through the motions, but now, I pray with purpose. I started sharing the things I learned with my husband. I started teaching my boys how to pray.Just yesterday, my 3 year old son asked me if God really could hear him when he prayed.Jennifer, I can't begin to thank you enough for writing this devotional. This is just the book I needed to wake me up.
