I have been reading this book for quite a while now and I find it to be a very good guide to anyone with or without the exposure to the principles of data warehouse. It gives the reader a bird's eye view of a Data Warehouse solution and how things are put together in perspective.I like the way the book is organized, taking you through a virtual tour of where a Data Warehouse conception actually begins (or should begin) and how it should all end (if we follow the right way it should all end happily!).I found Chapter 2 of this book particularly interesting, it analyzes the concept of `data' and its components in greater depth and detail and impresses the reader how important it is to understand your data better before you start the whole exercise of building a DWE/BI model. To quote Mr. Laberge "organizing the data is the key to creating and maintaining a data warehouse system" and "the better design up front, the less rework required in future". A DBA cannot agree more!!It only gets more interesting from there, leading to a discussion of the different approaches to implementing a data warehouse architecture, with quite a fair amount of information on ETL processing. There is a whole chapter on data governance, providing valuable insight on what actually comprises `data governance'. There is also the Project Methodology and Planning part, which offers excellent guidance and clarity on organizing/managing the whole effort. The book ends with `Post Project Review' as the final chapter, I have not seen that in many books and I think its a unique and fitting ending to this book. I am glad to have found a book that provides me with a total overview of a DWE and BI environment from beginning to end and not just the technical aspects of it.
As I work with customers around the world, I am always looking for material that will provide the necessary information and guidance needed to successfully implement a data warehouse and business intelligence system. Robert provides an excellent primer and guides the reader with his years of experience and successful implementations. In particular, I appreciated his complete "start to finish" approach and insertion of "cautionary statements" as applicable. I would recommend this book to any of my customers and colleagues interested in gaining initial insight into this subject area.
Important book to read for an ETL developer or a professional working with any aspects of BID (Business Intelligence Design). Chapters are well organized, easy to read, heavily loaded with logical examples, providing priceless "best practices" and large amount of experiential knowledge. Author emphasizes the importance of well organized data structure and data quality (as a DB developer, a heartfelt ditto), spends a nice amount of time on data modeling and proper choosing and handling of data components, business purpose and usage of data from OLAP and data mining perspectives, elaborates on success / failure factors and potential challenges of platform migration process, as well as discusses various design methodologies. A lot of great, well structured material to sink your teeth in.
Book written with good intent. But it reads like a bad movie plays; the kind of movie when you are half way into it and you have no clue what the author or writer is trying to portray. Their are great informational Gems in this book, don't get me wrong the author knows his stuff, but you will find yourself reading the same paragraph about 10 times to find the "plot."
This is looks like it is a DRM'd PDF, not a mobi. The viewer that you view it with is the same viewer you use to view PDFs , that you have sent to your kindle, not the usual viewer you get with mobi type Kindle books. You cannot change the text size, color scheme, page width, etc. I have bought over 230 Kindle books and this is the first one like it I have found. I am not impressed. If I wanted an unpleasant, uncomfortable reading experience, I would have bought the paper book..
