Oracle Database 11g & MySQL 5.6 Developer Handbook has awakened in me a great interest in database applications. It is well written. Even though English is not my primary language, as I read, the concepts and examples flowed smoothly from chapter to chapter. My understanding has increased and I have been able to visualize the examples presented. This book contains both ORACLE and MySQL examples. It will help you see how each work as well as the similarities and differences between the two. This book will save you time from doing searches on the web about ORACLE and MySQL to understand the fundamental concepts of databases.

I am a long time Oracle DBA & developer who recently needed to map and gap the core functionality of MySQL against Oracle, then get a large body of complex Oracle SQL to report exactly the same way against the same data in MySQL.Initially, I poured through documentation, pushed through test cases, but really found this book to be the core foundation & capstone with which I could map my embedded understanding of Oracle throughout my encounter with MySQL: Subqueries, in-line views, joins, triggers, stored functions and procedures, NDS, etc... all have a thorough treatment for the hands on, real world practitioner, not the typical rehash of the documentation with some 101 examples, but real world treatment of the subject that goes beyond any other. This book saved me at least 30 hours of wasted work. Thank you Mr. McLaughlin!

As an accountant, the whole IT world was a bit new and different for me to dive into. It's been rather difficult and at times extremely frustrating. However, it's been very rewarding. Because IT isn't my native tongue, it takes a while for me to understand things. Books like this one to helped me along the way quite a bit. This book is incredible in the sense that it can help me, an accountant with no IT experience, understand and implement complex database solutions revolving around transaction models and PL/SQL. The examples Professor McLaughlin uses in this book are both easy to understand and very helpful. As the prior review mentioned, his technical blog gives even more insight. This is an essential buy for anyone who wants to learn about Oracle and MySQL.

As a front-end web developer, just a few months ago my knowledge of database development was very limited. It is especially hard to find helpful Oracle and MySQL resources on the Web using search engines, so to have this book from one of the top database developers in the world has been a great blessing for me. Together with his site and blog, this book has been very helpful in giving me an understanding of the core principles of database development. As has been said, a full list of mistakes contained in the book are available on his blog. For anyone who wants to learn the fundamentals of Oracle and MySQL programming, this book will be a great resource!

I found the book to be a great reference when reading up on issues that aren't commonly documented in industry, and the index is pretty good when trying to look up particular topics. In addition, the numerous examples provided were great when reviewing the different topics covered, helping the reader to visualize what was being described by the author. Overall I would say that the book was great, and an easy read when compared to other technical books.I also found the author's errata (errors found in the book with corrections) in the comment section of his technical blog, which is also a great resource! Go to blog DOT mclaughlinsoftware DOT com and search Oracle MySQL Handbook in the search bar. The first result is the page with the errata in the comments section.

This book has been an excellent resource as I have studied and learned about database technology. The straight forward easy to understand nature of the book has been an excellent resource as I learn about how sql works. It has helped me in designing various database functions for the websites that I help develop. The last few chapters in this book are excellent resources for referencing pl/sql procedures. I appreciate that the book has an errata for the few minor errors that seem to have creep-ed in from the editorial process at the publishers. Overall an excellent book to buy for your bookshelf, not your average datebase book. The errata is on the author's blog:[...]

This book is very detailed in how Oracle and MySQL work, their important differences from the programming point of view, and how to use those tools with clever techniques that every IT professional would appreciate to have. This is the kind of book you learn something every time you read it. It will set the reader apart from the other IT professionals.

I am a student of Michael Mclaughlin's, not only is he a great teacher, but his book teaches you everything from the beginning. I had never even looked at any type of database or sql code in my life, and after this class and using this book, I now feel that I could get a job with the skills learned from this book alone. If you ever need to look up a particular topic, the index is amazing. He has example code of each topic in his book, so you can know how to use and implement it. This book deserves it's 5-star rating and if you get it and use it, it will teach you tons.
