My three year old girl had tubes put in her ears a few weeks ago. We stumbled upon this book prior to her surgery. She read it over and over again. It became her favorite book for quite a while. There is no question that this book helped her prepare for this stressful event. The pictures and text manage to provide frank and detailed information about getting tubes without being frightening. Parents will probably want to preview the book prior to reading it to their child, in order to tailor/edit the book to the child's developmental level. My wife and I would definitely recommend this to any family going through this process.

We bought this about a month before my son went to get his ear tubes put in. He was roughly 2 1/2 when we had it done, but he quickly grasped the concept of going to the hospital, and would walk around talking about "Luke". He certainly identified with the main character, and insisted that we bring his book along to the procedure.9 months later, and he still totes this book around as one of his favorites. It's a must have if your child is going in for ear tubes!

I bought this book for my son before he got his third set of tubes and adnoids out. It eased his fears and really prepared him. After the surgery, we wrote our own book modeled after this one based on my son's surgery so when he gets his tubes removed he will not worry.

My son just had his surgery yesterday to put tubes in both ears. We have been reading this book for about 2-3 weeks and he always asks to read it each night. My husband and I have been telling him the tubes will help him feel better and this book has really helped. It goes over all the different types of doctors he will encounter at the hospital and what their jobs are. On the day of the surgery, the nurses, doctor, anesthesiologist, and surgeon all commented on how much my son already knew about the procedure and he even told them what they would do! This book has been such a great support, the surgeon asked for the name and author stating he would like to recommend it to all parents at the pre op appointment, or sooner, to share with their little ones going through this process. I would recommend to any parent with a child who needs this procedure. It is a "read with" or "read to" book, not an independent read for children under 8 years old, I would guess. Great story and fantastic preparation for the real thing. (For me as well, I knew what they would be doing from this book). Highly recommend!

My daughter had just turned 3 when she got tubes in her ears. Once we found out she was getting them, we asked the doctor's office for book suggestions, but they didn't have any. We found this one on and it was great help as we prepared. It's not exactly what happened that day to her, but it was very similar and she enjoyed telling us the differences as we read it afterwards.

Disappointing book. I read it to my daughter, thinking that this will help her prepare for her surgery. I was wrong, it created unnecessary anxiety. The poor thing was freaking out about the IV (which is not used for tubes) and recovery. I think they over-did the recovery (yes, we were all grossed out that the boy was vomiting in the book). I think talking to the nurses was much better than reading this. I'll be returning it.

This helped my 4 year old prepare for his surgery, and he loved reading it. The only downfall (but practical) was the illustration of the child throwing up after surgery. My son fixated on this, and was scared he was going to throw up (which he did :o( ). I had to do a lot of damage control and reassuring that he was strong, and would be fine yadda yadda yadda....because his fear of throwing up was worse than the fear of surgery. Also, if your kid is going to have that surgery, and needs to be prepared for things the way mine does, make sure to tell them about the smell of the gas that puts them out. I left that part out, that it smelled bad, and he went under crying, which broke my heart.

My son is 2 and 1/2 and this book was fabulous in preparing him...from the descriptions of what Luke is feeling to the illustrations of how the doctors and nurses are dressed in the operating room it is fabulous!I definitely recommend it! And of course in my case the multicultrual cast of characters was an extra bonus!
