The five elements. This book has many opportunities to improve. I don’t think it is a great book to introduce the five elements to first graders. I can only give this 2 stars, I describe in detail the areas I find lacking in my review. Fire, fire is briefly described as the process of combustion. It states that fire gives off heat, light and flame. I find this definition of fire to be inadequate. There is so much to say about fire and they only say this. There are only 2 pictures of fire. I think it would be helpful for the target audience of first graders, that this book was written for, to see more pictures of fire, just so they can see that fire takes on different looks in different situations.Water, They describe water as a transparent fluid forming oceans etc, and covering 71% of earth. Again there is much left un-said. It is not even mentioned that water is essential for life, or that it is an important resource that we need to take care of. Only 2 pictures for this as well, and one of them looks like an aeration pond at a water treatment facility; it would have been so easy to add a brief description of the pictures. This would have significantly increased the educational value of this book. This book leaves a lot to be desired as an introduction for first graders to the five elements and I am not even half way thru reading it; well lets continue. Earth, I a college educated adult don’t know what they are trying to say with their definition of earth. They use earth as a noun, and the 2 pictures show freshly turned dirt and then rows of newly sprouted corn. Wood, I actually like their definition of wood, it is accurate and makes sense. I wish for their 2 pictures they used one of them to show a woody plant that was not a tree.
