I first bought this book when I was in college and going through a great deal of sexual temptation and sin with my then-girlfriend. I'm in a much better place in life now, and am working hard to make my relationship with God my focus, and a conduit for developing a relationship with a future wife. As such, I flipped through Every Young Man's Battle again to see if there was any insight that could apply to my life now, and I soon came to a realization about this book: I hate it. What's more, in hindsight I can see that it caused me more frustration and confusion in my college days than I would have endured without it. While some of the principles presented are true and wise in regard to pornography, lust, and addiction, such as their progressive, habitual, and destructive natures, these statements become lost in an overwhelming tirade that forms the majority of the book. A vast amount of the content is contradictory, dehumanizing of both men and women, hyperbolic, and ultimately damning of any form of sexuality. Where to begin? This book is contradictory in both the ultimate point the authors make (save yourself for marriage) and how to get there (shield yourself from lust). They repeatedly emphasize that lust often begins as something small that progresses - which is true - then go on to give graphic accounts of such instances in an almost titillating fashion. Most of these are detailed retellings of sexual experiences or encounters by either the authors or guest writers, from start to finish. They are trying to emphasize their points by being blunt, but there is a difference between bluntness and explicitness that they clearly missed.
This book is poison. I have to characterize it that way because it is so crude and unnecessarily graphic in places that I can't possibly recommend that someone read it despite it containing some kernels of truth and good advice. It's inappropriate for a man of any age. And I write this not as someone who is unexposed to the world, but rather as an attorney who has represented rapists, child abusers and molesters. This book is simply no respite from the endless drumbeat of depraved sexuality in culture, and it is a disgusting and gratuitous sexuality at that. For instance, did the author need to tell us how he learned about masturbation? And how to do it? Including lubricant? Also, did the author need to burden us by telling us by name who his favorite centerfold was? (I keep asking myself--what if that woman is/becomes a Christian? Why has he perpetuated her shame for others to read?) The graphic nature of the text is unbelievably bad. Truly awful. Toward the end of the book there are some kernels of truth, but the balance of the book is so outrageous and unbiblical in its graphic depictions that I could never, ever recommend that a Christian or non-Christian alike read this book. The authors have a lot of emotional and spiritual growing up to do before they put books like this in the marketplace. I won't project bad intentions onto the authors, but I will categorically say that their execution is an epic spiritual fail. Mothers, and even fathers, may think that this is the 'strong medicine' that needs to be administered to sons who are caught up in pornography or sexual activity. It is not. This is not the only way to communicate with a young person.
