The book of this title was first published in 1929 with 382 pages and many photos of carpets, 32 of the 400+ illustrations in color. In 1989, the Antique Collectors' Club of England expanded the book by adding about 75 additional "colour" plates; this very heavy book now has 484 pages. The renowned Ian Bennett penned the introduction and greatly expanded the bibliography. This is truly a lovely book. The dust cover points out that when we think of carpets or rugs, we always put the word "Persian" or "oriental" before them. The vast majority of my books do. But this is much more extensive than that. Here are the main subjects, rugs of:Spain; France; the UK; the North Countries; Poland and the Balkans; Germany, Austria and Czecho-Slovakia; Belgium, Holland and Italy; and American hand-made, including Native American, and machine-made. There are whole sections on looms and how to weave and knot rugs. Unfortunately, there are whole sections of the book which have only b&w photos. But so, so many half and full pages are filled with illustrations that it's hard to complain that not all are in color. I think just a hint of provincial thinking sneaks out from the original text here. But wafting through the different regions is fun and seeing variations by country is quite interesting. All in all, a very nice book to have. Since it's so very inexpensive, I suggest you get it.
