Symbolism And Numerals In Playing Cards

SYMBOLISM AND NUMERALS IN PLAYING CARDSThe book takes the reader through the likely source of the original and modern cards, postulating a theory to show how such play objects and their symbols were used to convey a battle message, utilising the implements and ideas of past times and modelling their behaviour on ancient wars. Various cultures were implicated in the development. These were countries in the Levant, which covers a large area along the southern shores of the Mediterranean and included Arabic peoples.Europe in the 13th century had plenty of contact with those areas and even sent its armies to fight in the Crusades several times. Such close contact allowed the transfer of concepts and ideas to Europe and the cards with their battle symbolism and representation form prime examples of their society and behaviour. The treatment of the numbers by the Pythagorean school of thought is highlighted, to demonstrate the connection of such thinking with the numerals and formations in games and wars. The triangular nature of all game aspects is examined and compared to the religious beliefs of pagans and Christians. No such extensive analysis of these facts and connections seems to be available. Therefore the work could constitute a novelty and lead to other proposals and hypothesis to further clarify the facts.
