The Droid X smart phone is really a mini-computer, with lots of useful applications built in and other applications that can be downloaded. Unfortunately, even though the built-in applications might seem intuitive, they are not. The instructions that come with the Droid X and that can be downloaded from the manufacturer's web site just scratch the surface of the device's capabilities. If ever a gizmo required full scale instructions, this is it. "Droid X: The Missing Manual" comes to the rescue.The book covers in great detail the most useful of the applications. (It still didn't explain "Cardock" or several other aps, but after reading the book, I was able to intuit how to use them.) It covers functions from using the telephone to integrating the Droid X into a Virtual Private Network. It offers explanations that you would never have guessed existed on the phone. As an example, I was concerned about the handling of photographs that were attached to e-mails that I received on my phone. I've never been able to figure out how to save them. Gralla told me how. Press the image (not tap) and a menu came up asking me if I wanted to save the picture. There were some permutations of that function that Gralla didn't specifically discuss. For example, I often receive images embedded in e-mails that are larger than the Droid's screen. After reading Gralla, I was able to infer that pressing the image would call up a menu that would allow me to select a viewer that would fit the image to the Droid screen size. Similar instructions were available for most of the major applications. I was astonished at what I could do on the Droid with Google maps.The problem with the book is that it is just a little too big to carry around.
