If you collect older watches, especially pocket watches, from the early to mid 20th century, this is the guide to buy. The watches featured contain detailed information and reflect the latest value trends. The book is a nice learning tool for those wanting to move into watch collecting.
For the beginner this is a very good guide. I know that some makes of watches are not covered but all the top brands are there.I am still reading up on new questions all the time.I collect pocket watches, but there is also a large section on wrist watches.So far i have found some good deals by using this books price and condition guide.Im sure if you are just starting out as a collector you will find this a perfect tool.
Very helpful, but don't expect a picture of every watch you may be looking for. You may come close. Only other issue are the prices change readily. If your going to collect vintage watches you will need several similar books to get a more rounded idea what you may want to buy or sell! But this is a good starting point.Also look at prices on Ebay- but be very very cautious as there are a number of FAKE or modified watches being sold as originals!
A nice book, but I was looking for more indepth history. For example the fact that many watch companies sent movements to the U.S. in the 1940's and beyond and had their watches cased here to avoid tariffs. Or the fact that you can find high end watches that used the movements of other watch makers and why and when they did this. I would have been nice to get a better idea of how to date movements on some of these watches. The search continues.
It's a very nice book since I am a big watch collector. Since I am just a collector, not a watch or jewelry seller it's still a little confusing. I plan on bringing it into a jewelry store where they can help me understand it more. I really bought it for the Hamilton pocket watches since I have two. So if you understand the book it will be great for you, but it can also be great if you don't. All you have to do is take it to a jewelry dealer and they can probably help you understand and make the book more valuable to you.
Although the watch industry changes with its designs and complications, this is a good guide to have leading up to this printing. Once you go beyond the print date; it of course does not show current models and it is outdated. However, like with any other books for collectors, this is good book to have when viewing what has already been produced and may not be included in the newer publications.
This is the industry standard for evaluating, grading and determining value of most watches. This is a "guide" and values are not necessarily 100% accurate.
