Overall this is an interesting book with some good commentary and full-color pictures. It was a great read and Ring really knows his stuff. The author is obviously analytical and breaks down each movie according to the underlying message. Therein lies the problem as the enjoyment of a sci-fi flick gets reduced to analyzing its technical aspects, metaphysical message and societal impact. Also, the list shows a definite preference for 1950s classics and movies released in the past 10 years (the selections create a barbell effect where many new classics from the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s are not included). His definition of science fiction in the introduction is limited to "scientific advancements, processes and phenomenons". That means many key titles like 1984, Total Recall, Gattaca, Artificial Intelligence, Vanilla Sky, Butterfly Effect, I Am Legend, They Live and the flop Dune aren't even mentioned at all. If they aren't sci-fi movies then what are they? 1984 is an absolute landmark book and film that influenced many books, movies and society at large. Fantasy is completely ignored so there is no talk of Excalibur, Jacob's Ladder, Conan the Barbarian or Logan's Run either. I have ranked the chapters below.Rating: A-. Chapter 1: I would agree with the "Best of the Best" rankings except Bride of Frankenstein and Young Frankenstein. Very well done.Rating: B. Chapter 2: Some movies from Chapter 3 belong here (notably Brazil, The Thing and Invasion of the Body Snatchers) but it is fairly complete.Rating: C+. Chapter 3: This is the most controversial chapter where Robocop, Superman, Back to the Future and Minority Report reside with Re-Animator, Phantom Menace, Transformers and some anime. Not all of it seems right.Rating: C.
