This book does not offer nearly the level of detail that the test expects. Thankfully Microsoft was offering a free online practice test (previously included with their books) so it was apparent how much was lacking from the book before I took the test. You need to use some other exam prep material if you expect to pass the test.
Not adequate on its own. Does not go in depth enough with AD FS - which is a complete re-architect in 2012 and is a bit light on IPAM and HA. Took test today, scored 800 on the 410 and 411 objectives and 612 on the 412 objectives. 700 required on all 3. There are no labs in this text - at all. It suggests you go to the online labs which are frequently broken.Would recommend to anyone else taking the 70-417 that in addition to this book they also buy the 70-412 training guiude
Don't let this book your only study guide. Use it as a table of contents to spring board into areas you are weak in, use it to study as you sit at work. I used it with online training and was able to pass. Labs are crucial to passing any exam these days so don't neglect that area of study. Good luck!\
I would give this reference 3/5 stars. There is a lot of good information in this book, but you will NEED to supplement with MS virtual labs and other Microsoft resources in order to pass the upgrade exam. This book helps with bring a lot of information in to one location instead of searching the entire TechNet site. Additionally, the author does a decent job of explaining information you may not know.
Passed exam, prepared by using this book and some technet.Advantages: covers all exam topics, almost none errors in text, useful tipsDisadvantages: does not include lab exercises like some other exam ref ms-press books I used to, so be sure to try every new feature in test lab by yourself.
This book is useless unless you knowledge of Server 2008 is still on par with when you got your original certification. This book does not cover all exam objectives! Note the following line on the Exam 70-417 page of Microsoft: "Please note that the questions may test on, but will not be limited to, the topics described in the bulleted text." This means they can, and will, ask any question from any of the original exams (410, 411 & 412). So unless your knowledge is still on the same level as when you got your certification skip this book. Your best bet might even be to do the 3 separate exams and get the study guides for those...
Book is an easy read and has the necessary info for the 2012 R2 exam.
It was very usefull for exam preparation. You stil Lal need plenty of hands on and reading if technet articles.
