There is a sort of bond between baseball fans and baseball cards that can't be quantified to people who haven't felt that bond themselves. Even at age 55 as I write this, there's something about holding a card of past players that evokes a simpler time for the person holding the card. I don't think stamp or coin collectors have this same sensation because baseball cards have images of the players and heroes of our youth. One of the results of that bond is that vintage baseball cards can be very expensive. Everyone knows about the $2 million Honus Wagner card, but there are many other cards that can set you back hundreds or thousands of dollars each. A 1933 Babe Ruth card goes for $7,000. A 1941 Joe DiMaggio card is worth $3K. Even a card of someone you've never heard of from the same set the Wagner card comes from costs over $500. That's real money. And that's why I believe this book, along with Dover's companion "Classic Baseball Cards," is by far the most cost-efficient way to stick your toe into the vintage cards water. For less than $5 (shipping included), it's possible to possess 92 reproductions of cards featuring players now enshrined in Cooperstown. The cards are perforated so you can take them out of the book, which consists of 16 pages of cards on 8x11 cardstock, although it's just as easy to leave them in. Personally, I still prefer holding them when I look at them.It should be understood that these are not high-quality reprints. The glossy card fronts look adequate enough and they're reprinted in their original size, but the card backs are all in black & white, the cardstock is not particularly thick and even if you cut the cards out using scissors along the perforation, the edges still have that perforated "look" to them.
