Bird Decoys Of North America: Nature, History, And Art

Sumptuous, informative, and written by a leading scholar in the field, this is the ultimate book on North American bird decoys. Shaw provides an insightful look at the decoy's Native American origins through its evolution, and demonstrates that although they were created as humble tools, decoys are also works of art, examples of craftsmanship and ingenuity, and pieces of history. The 300 stunning illustrations include delicate paintings by John James Audubon, as well as both historic and contemporary photography.

Recommended especially to those with a new interest in North American decoys, but seasoned collectors will also enjoy the wonderful photography and historic photographs and will pick up nuggets of information from Shaw's text. Many of the decoys illustrated may be familiar to the more hard core collectors, as some have previously been illustrated in other publications or auction catalogs. Regardless, the authors knowledge of the subject, the wonderful illustrations, and the overall format and presentation of the book, coupled with the reasonable cost make this a worthy acquisition to anyone with interest in the subject

I received this as a gift. It is a book that is full of beautiful photos of remarkable birds, but also has many great old black and white photos of hunters and carvers. There is quite a bit of well-written text about history and the different regions and their famous carvers. I find the lengthy captions with the photos to be very informative. For me anyway this is not the kind of book I would read front to back, but when I leaf through the photos, I often find myself drawn into reading quite a bit of the text. It covers a lot of ground, so I suppose some people might find it's not in depth enough. To call this simply a coffee table book, however, does not do it justice. It's a surprisingly large topic, and there are plenty of books devoted to small areas of study.

Spans the gap from interested novice to hardcore collector. I have bought several copies to give to new customers in my shop, who need to see the big picture in this historic art form. A clearly written introduction to the birds, history, and art of the decoy. Very fine photos as well! Thanks Bob!

Excellent review of the history of decoys. I'm a duck hunter and found this to be informative and enjoyable.

According to my son, who was the recipient of this gift, this is a wonderful book, especially because of the history of decoys and wonderful pictures and illustrations. This is truly a great gift for the duck hunter.

An interesting book on the major decoy carvers and their work plus a history of how and why the decoys were used. A great book for collectors that are interested in background information.

This is a great resource book for me as I carve and collect decoys. It is well written and the author seems very knowledgeable. I was particularly enthralled by the color photographs.

A wonderful compilation of some of the best decoys ever carved in North America. I enjoy looking at the exceptional photographs of these early works of art.
