In The Spiritual Warfare Answer Book, Dr. David Jeremiah reminds us that the Christian life is a battlefield. Our battle is not with the culture or with those who do not believe in God but with an enemy unseen and powerful.Using a question-and-answer format, Dr. Jeremiah answers 75 questions pertinent to spiritual warfare. Each question forms a short chapter with answers rooted in scripture and practical application. Particularly relevant is the introductory section that answers the question, How can I be certain I’ve been called to battle? His answer is succinct and sobering: if you are a Christian, you are in battle—and you don’t have to lose.The first major section of the book describes our enemy, Satan, and his legions of demons. Covering such topics as Satan’s origin to Satan’s power and organization, The Spiritual Warfare Answer Book gives us an explanation as well as the encouragement that although our enemy is powerful, his power has a limit an extent as does the time God has allowed him to do evil.The primary section of the book focuses on the armor of God from Ephesians chapter 6. Dr. Jeremiah explains each part of the armor of God, how to put it on, and what role it plays in spiritual warfare.I particularly enjoyed this quote on prayer: "If . . . you have two productive days of watchful prayer, [Satan] might let you believe that you have finally mastered the discipline of prayer. Then, on the third day when you fail to be watchful in prayer, he will tell you that you’re a failure, that you’ve completely blown it, and that there’s no use trying any further. If you miss one day of fruitful prayer, Satan can try to convince you that you’re beyond help and hope — that you needn’t try again.
While the title may seem a bit sweeping in scope, this little tome actually does provide a great many answers to an often misunderstood (or under-understood) topic. While not exhaustive, if you’ve got questions about spiritual warfare, chances are you’ll find your answer here, plus dozens more to questions you never thought to ask.Another aspect to this book I appreciated was how much of my new knowledge added illumination to the collection of biblical stories, from Genesis to Revelation, revealing them as myriad pieces of one whole story. (The Nephilim, for example, mentioned in Genesis 6, and then referred to again in Jude.) This then further whetted my interest in knowing more, so that I might live my life in Christ more effectively, with far greater perspective (which is, in itself, a superior piece of weaponry for standing firm against the enemy’s schemes).As David Jeremiah explains in his introduction,“The biblical context for viewing all of life’s events is called spiritual warfare — the age-old conflict between the kingdom of darkness and the kingdom of light…. The ruler of the powers of darkness, Satan, is none too happy about what God has accomplished in Christ. So Satan’s main goal is to destroy the faith of Christians by getting us to doubt God’s goodness, love, forgiveness, protection, provision, and promises. When Satan choreographs difficult circumstances in our lives, it is not just to inflict pain; it is for the purpose of destroying our trust in God.”I also like the small size of this book, along with its pithy chapters. The size makes it easy to tuck in a tote, and its relative brevity makes it not only accessible to the lay Christian, but easy to read in bite-sized morsels.
